Officers and men of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) have launched a large-scale extortion scheme in Abuja that is netting these rogue officials tens of thousands of naira daily.

Pointblanknews.com learnt that these officials have mastered the art of extorting thousands of naira from motorists for alleged illegal parking, with large slice of the booty going into private pockets. Most of the time they arbitrarily tow vehicles parked legally to the extortion spot around Eagle Square, deflate the tires, and fleece the victim.

These officers, who ply their trade under the watch of Corp Marshall Osita Chidoka, work in concert with one F. Onuorah whose private account is one of the accounts victims are directed to pay cash into.

One of the victims, whose car was towed illegally by these unscrupulous officials on February 14, 2012, from around Eagle Square to the extortion spot nearby, Abuja based attorney, Alex Oketa, has already petitioned the Corp Marshall, and threatened to drag the FRSC to court for extortion. He alleged on that day he was ripped off over N6000 by officers of the FRSC.

Pointblanknews.com learnt that the FRSC officials often direct victims to pay between N3000, and N10,000 into the personal account of Onuorah at Aso Savings and Loans with number 012050136790016. On that day Oketa said he paid N3000 into Onuorah’s account. Another account used at Aso Savings by the FRSC has the number 0021441034.

It was further gathered that once your car is impounded, it is towed to the extortion spot around Eagle Square, where the tires are deflated. An agent of the FRSC officers simply called Ojo, a vulcanizer, runs the spot. You pay N500 to him, and an extra N100 for the space your car occupied.

To rub salt on injury, the victims are compelled to part with another N500 meant for the FRSC booklet.

According to Oketa “ These conspirators realize millions of naira daily from this illegal venture, as more than 10,000 persons fall victims daily. The outrageous amount usually paid to F. Onuorah’s account is purportedly for the tow. How can the tow of a car for a distance of about 100 ft amount to N3000.?If the vans belong to Onuorah, where are the FRSC vans for which huge amounts from government coffers is being used to purchase and maintain them”
