{"id":100073,"date":"2022-10-07T14:39:04","date_gmt":"2022-10-07T13:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=100073"},"modified":"2022-10-07T14:39:04","modified_gmt":"2022-10-07T13:39:04","slug":"just-in-appeal-court-orders-asuu-members-to-resume-work-immediately","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/just-in-appeal-court-orders-asuu-members-to-resume-work-immediately\/","title":{"rendered":"JUST IN: Appeal court orders ASUU members to resume work immediately"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ordered members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to end their eight-month-old strike immediately.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nAt the court session on Friday, the appellate court said ASUU should obey the order of an industrial court which directed the suspension of the strike before seeking to appeal the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Delivering a ruling at the resumed court session on Friday,\u00a0a three-member panel of the appellate court granted the union \u201cconditional leave\u201d to appeal the industrial court\u2019s decision.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe panel led by Hamman Barka said for ASUU to file its notice of appeal within seven days, it must show evidence that its members have resumed work immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The panel held that failure to adhere to the order will make the appeal incompetent before the court of appeal.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">ASUU has been on strike since\u00a0February 14\u00a0to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, and a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.<\/p>\n<p>After several meetings to resolve the strike ended inconclusively, the federal government proceeded to the national industrial court to challenge the action.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe industrial court, in a ruling delivered on September 21, granted the federal government\u2019s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike pending the determination of the substantive suit.<\/p>\n<p>Not satisfied with the ruling, ASUU approached the court of appeal seeking leave to challenge the lower court\u2019s decision.<\/p>\n<p>The court of appeal on Wednesday had asked the parties to explore the option of an\u00a0out-of-court\u00a0settlement.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nHowever, at the court session on Thursday, both parties agreed to proceed with the hearing after failing to reach a settlement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"adL\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Court of Appeal in Abuja has ordered members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to end their eight-month-old strike immediately.
