{"id":102006,"date":"2022-12-16T20:53:32","date_gmt":"2022-12-16T19:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=102006"},"modified":"2022-12-16T20:53:32","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T19:53:32","slug":"secret-abortion-claims-military-submits-self-to-nhrc-for-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/secret-abortion-claims-military-submits-self-to-nhrc-for-investigation\/","title":{"rendered":"Secret Abortion Claims: Military Submits Self To NHRC For Investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1752399599286051792\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor has invited the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate allegations that the Armed Forces are behind a secret abortion programme in the North East.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nIrabor made the request when he led some senior military officers to the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn recent times, there have been reports which alluded that the armed forces are involved in a government programme of abortions in the North-East of Nigeria from 2013 till date,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat report was published by Reuters and of course, when we looked at it, we felt, \u2018This is certainly not us, and it does not indeed represent the professional standing of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018It does not also indicate the DNA of our operational engagements not just in North-East of Nigeria, but across the length and breadth of this country where we have footprints of operations in line with the duties of the constitution.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The defence chief stated that the military, being guided by law, saw it fit to submit itself to the NHRC as the appropriate establishment to undertake investigations of alleged human rights violations.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the commission, Irabor said, \u201cThe NHRC stands a good ground to carry out such an investigation and if that would be what you decide to do, I wish to use this opportunity to assure you that we grant you unfettered access to our establishments across not just the North-East but across the country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Executive Secretary, National Human Rights Commission, Anthony Ojukwu, in his address, explained that in keeping with international standards, such an investigation has to be public, open, transparent, and comply with the principle of fair hearing and accountability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour request today is in line with the determination of the commission to investigate the allegations because of the human rights implications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccordingly, your visit and request has coincided with the resolve of the commission to investigation in the Reuters report because of the human rights implications in the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs you may be aware, the investigation process of the commission must meet the international human rights standards required for this kind of investigation,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor has invited the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate allegations that the Armed Forces are behind a secret abortion programme in&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":101836,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-102006","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-exclusive"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
