{"id":102029,"date":"2022-12-19T15:03:28","date_gmt":"2022-12-19T14:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=102029"},"modified":"2022-12-19T15:03:28","modified_gmt":"2022-12-19T14:03:28","slug":"breaking-court-convicts-okupe-of-money-laundering","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/breaking-court-convicts-okupe-of-money-laundering\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Court convicts Okupe of money laundering"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday convicted the Director-General of the Labour Party\u2019s Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, for breaching the Money Laundering Act.<\/p>\n<p>Ruling on Monday, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu found Okupe guilty of contravening sections 16(1)&amp;(2) of the Money Laundering Act, for accepting cash payments without going through the financial institution, in excess of the threshold allowed under the Act.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe court ruled that Okupe received hundreds of millions in cash from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) while Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd) was in office.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Okupe on a 59-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering and diversion of funds to the tune of N702 million.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nHe was charged alongside two companies \u2013 Value Trust Investment Ltd and Abrahams Telecoms Ltd.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nOkupe was found guilty on counts 34, 35, 36, and 59.<\/p>\n<p>The judge, however, found the defendants not guilty in counts 1 to 33 on the grounds that the prosecution failed to establish the charge of money laundering, criminal breach of trust and corruption against Dasuki.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Ojukwu stood down proceedings till 1:45 pm Monday for Okupe to exercise his right under Section 310 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) to call witnesses to testify about his character before the court could sentence him.<\/p>\n<p>Okupe was Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"adL\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday convicted the Director-General of the Labour Party\u2019s Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, for breaching the Money Laundering Act.
