{"id":102036,"date":"2022-12-20T11:29:21","date_gmt":"2022-12-20T10:29:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=102036"},"modified":"2022-12-20T11:29:21","modified_gmt":"2022-12-20T10:29:21","slug":"terrorism-financing-court-stops-dss-from-quizzing-emefiele","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/terrorism-financing-court-stops-dss-from-quizzing-emefiele\/","title":{"rendered":"Terrorism Financing: Court stops DSS from Quizzing Emefiele"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1752726787523636548\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The federal high court sitting in Abuja has refused an application by the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest and detain Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Pointblanknwews.com can report authoritatively.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The motion ex parte filed by an applicant in the absence of the respondent, Justice John Tsoho, the chief judge, said the secret police did not provide any concrete evidence to substantiate its claims that Emefiele was involved in terrorism financing and economic crimes.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">A highly placed source at the court told our correspondent yesterday, that the judge said he should have been taken into confidence if there was any evidence to back the allegations in the application, marked FHC\/ABJ\/CS\/2255\/2022.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cThe honourable judge also wondered why the name of the respondent was given simply as \u2018Godwin Emefiele\u2019 without a material disclosure that he is the same person as the CBN governor, a highly ranking public official who occupies an extremely sensitive position,\u201d the source declared.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The court said such an application should have been accompanied with the presidential approval because of the grave implications for the Nigerian economy if the CBN governor is arrested and detained.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">There are suggestions that the bid to arrest Emefiele might be political given the impact the redesign of the naira and limit on cash withdrawals might have on vote-buying in the 2023 elections.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">A number of politicians have complained that the naira redesign is targeted at them but President Muhammadu Buhari has given his full backing to Emefiele over the policy.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Yesterday, a group of civil society organisations raised the alarm that there was a plot to frame Emefiele for terrorism and remove him from office.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Meanwhile, the\u00a0 Department of State Security service , DSS, warned Nigerians against being used to \u201cundermine\u201d its investigations.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In a statement by Dr. Peter Afunanya, DSS spokesperson, said the service will not be distracted by those seeking to use \u201cpropaganda\u201d to undermine its lawful investigations.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Afunanya said one of the duties of the DSS is the \u201cinvestigation of matters of national security dimension. It has always discharged this responsibility in the overall interest of Nigerian citizens\u201d.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cAs such, the Service will continue to disseminate actionable intelligence to the relevant authorities devoid of any sentiment,\u201d the statement reads.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cWhile professionally discharging its mandate, the DSS pledges to remain focused and unbiased. It will not, by any means, succumb to propaganda, intimidation and the desperation of hirelings to undermine it.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cIt will also not give room to the use of falsehood and deceit to misdirect public understanding and perceptions of issues of national importance.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u201cGiven not to join issues, the Service warns those on a wild goose chase to be mindful of their actions.
