{"id":103459,"date":"2023-03-04T16:32:11","date_gmt":"2023-03-04T15:32:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=103459"},"modified":"2023-03-04T16:32:11","modified_gmt":"2023-03-04T15:32:11","slug":"breaking-polls-inec-admits-failure-vows-to-punish-officials-found-wanting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/breaking-polls-inec-admits-failure-vows-to-punish-officials-found-wanting\/","title":{"rendered":"BREAKING: Polls: INEC admits failure, vows to punish officials found wanting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">The Independent National Electoral Commission is saddened by the flaws in conduct of presidential and parliamentary elections last Saturday and said its officials, including ad-hoc or collation personnel, who may have been found wanting would be severely punished.<\/p>\n<p>Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu stated this on Saturday at a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners in Abuja.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe INEC boss insisted on working harder ahead and during next Saturday\u2019s governorship and House of Assembly elections to avoid challenges of February 25, 2023 elections that has generated controversy.<\/p>\n<p>Yakubu disclosed that staff or ad-hoc officials and collation officers who were negligent in the last election would be excluded in next week\u2019s exercise.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n\u201cRECs must also immediately initiate disciplinary action where prima facie evidence of wrongdoing has been established.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Yakubu told the RECs that it was imperative for the Commission to review performances from Saturday\u2019s election.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the elections were painstakingly done but they came with issues ranging from technology, delay by election officials, and attitudes of political party agents among others.<\/p>\n<p>The INEC Chairman stated that a lot of lessons have been learnt from the presidential elections ahead of the Governorship and State Assembly elections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo doubt, last week\u2019s national elections raised a number of issues that require immediate, medium, and long-term solutions. The planning for the election was painstakingly done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, its implementation came with challenges, some of them unforeseen.
