{"id":104012,"date":"2023-04-02T22:49:15","date_gmt":"2023-04-02T21:49:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=104012"},"modified":"2023-04-02T22:49:15","modified_gmt":"2023-04-02T21:49:15","slug":"why-we-arrested-lawyers-handling-apc-election-petition-police","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/why-we-arrested-lawyers-handling-apc-election-petition-police\/","title":{"rendered":"Why we arrested lawyers handling APC election petition \u2014 Police"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1762087699290574250\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Rivers State Police Command has explained in great detail why its operatives had to arrest three lawyers and other people handling the All Progressives Congress election petition.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nSpeaking for the command, the state\u2019s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said it was all a mix-up.<\/p>\n<p>This was also as Iringe-Koko stated that it was important for the police to inform the public of what really happened.<\/p>\n<p>She explained that on March 31, 2023 at about 11:20am, information was received that some lodgers occupying three rooms in a popular hotel were seen carrying packages in and out of the rooms, and printing what seems like documents of the Independent National Electoral Commission, including results.<\/p>\n<p>A video recording of the activities in one of the rooms was forwarded by the informant to the Command\u2019s Commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>The informant neither disclosed the identity of the lodgers nor who they were working for.<\/p>\n<p>Iringe-Koko said: \u201cAs a responsible law enforcement agency, the Police needed to act on the intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThus, based on the report, the Police approached the court to obtain a search warrant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe warrant was dutifully executed on the 1st of April 2023, at about 7:2am.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the course of the search, eight persons were arrested, and several documents, laptops, and printers were recovered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe arrested persons and exhibits were taken to the Surveillance Centre and later transferred to the State CID.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn Assistant Commissioner of Police was tasked to lead the investigation team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was in the process of profiling them that it was revealed that three of the arrested persons were lawyers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe APC State Chairman and the party\u2019s Gubernatorial candidate in the last election showed up at the station to inform the Police that the lawyers were hired by the party to prepare their papers for filling at the election tribunal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSubsequently, the NBA President and General Secretary called the Commissioner of Police, who assured them that the lawyers would be released when they had finished making their statements.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccordingly, the lawyers were promptly released on self-recognizance, while the other five persons were released to a reliable surety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMeanwhile, since the investigating team lacked the technical competence to establish the veracity of the suspected printed fake INEC documents, the State REC was requested to send the Commission\u2019s ICT personnel to inspect and identify the documents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Police Command wishes to assure that once that is done, the most appropriate and professional thing will be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Command enjoins members of the public to continue to furnish the Police with information and report every suspicious movement around them; as the effectiveness of Community Policing is predicated on collaboration and information sharing.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Rivers State Police Command has explained in great detail why its operatives had to arrest three lawyers and other people handling the All Progressives Congress election petition.
