{"id":104937,"date":"2023-05-21T20:33:21","date_gmt":"2023-05-21T19:33:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=104937"},"modified":"2023-05-21T20:33:21","modified_gmt":"2023-05-21T19:33:21","slug":"all-eyes-on-court-to-finish-job-inec-did-halfway-in-feb-25-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/all-eyes-on-court-to-finish-job-inec-did-halfway-in-feb-25-election\/","title":{"rendered":"All eyes on court to finish job INEC did \u2018halfway\u2019 in Feb 25 election\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1766532639215130587\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Emeritus Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has said all eyes are on the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal to finish the job the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) did \u2018halfway\u2019 during the February 25 election.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nSpeaking to journalists after a special mass to mark the 2023 World Communication Week of the Catholic Church at St. Gabriel\u2019s Chaplaincy in Abuja on Sunday, the respected cleric called on the judiciary to find a way to allow live telecast of the petition tribunal, even though it has not been done before.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nOnaiyekan states that as the petition tribunal proceeds, Nigerians are waiting with bated breath to see what the outcome will be.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll eyes are on the court. We tried our best to vote; we were told to go to court. We are now in court. All eyes are on the court. We have trust in the court that they finish the job that INEC did halfway,\u201d the religious leader said.<\/p>\n<p>He, therefore, emphasized the importance of transparency in the process and argued that if witnesses have anything to say that people shouldn\u2019t know, they shouldn\u2019t be saying it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is in the interest of the judiciary is to allow the people to see what is happening, even if it means adjusting their rules.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVoters don\u2019t have the locus standi in court to challenge election outcomes. The matter is left to the candidates. That\u2019s why it\u2019s important that the court proceedings are seen live on TV,\u201d Onaiyekan said.<\/p>\n<p>On the topic of communication, the Emeritus Archbishop noted that communication is essential for resolving conflicts and building relationships.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe social media has come into the picture. You cannot ignore it anymore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCommunication is meant to build and not to destroy; to unite and not divide; to entertain and not to sadden. This is what we are praying for today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the special mass, the National Director of Social Communications, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Very Rev. Fr.
