{"id":105276,"date":"2023-06-06T21:31:03","date_gmt":"2023-06-06T20:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=105276"},"modified":"2023-06-06T21:31:03","modified_gmt":"2023-06-06T20:31:03","slug":"atikus-petition-against-tinubu-suffers-adjournment-over-inecs-refusal-to-release-electoral-documents","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/atikus-petition-against-tinubu-suffers-adjournment-over-inecs-refusal-to-release-electoral-documents\/","title":{"rendered":"Atiku\u2019s petition against Tinubu suffers adjournment over INEC&#8217;s\u00a0refusal to release electoral documents"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja on Tuesday abruptly adjourned the petition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against the election of President Bola Tinubu due to alleged refusal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make some critical electoral documents available to him.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\nThe\u00a0court shifted further hearing in the petition till June 7 pending the time the electoral body is expected to have\u00a0responded to the request of Atiku and the Peoples\u00a0Democratic Party\u00a0(PDP)\u00a0for\u00a0access to\u00a0documents.<\/p>\n<p>At Tuesday\u2019s proceedings, Eyitayo Jegede, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria who conducted proceedings for Atiku sought to tender forms EC8A from 10 out of 21 Local Government Areas of Kogi State to establish the petition against Tinubu.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibits mainly documents used for the February 25 Presidential Election are those from Ankpa, Dekina, Idah, Ofu, Olamaboro, Yagba East, Yagba West, Kabba-Bunu, Igalamela Odolu and Kogi.<\/p>\n<p>Although, the schedule of documents to the effect was filed along with the exhibits, the\u00a0court however noted that tendering such sensitive exhibits in piece meals would not be of any help especially in the areas of marking and numbering them.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nJegede,\u00a0who rose to the questions put to him by the court stood his ground and blamed the INEC for deliberate refusal to supply his client with the electoral documents.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0senior lawyer, who\u00a0hinted the\u00a0court that Atiku had paid as much as N6\u00a0million\u00a0for the\u00a0release\u00a0of\u00a0certified\u00a0true copies\u00a0of the exhibits, said\u00a0the electoral body had not been forthcoming and cooperating as required and envisaged.<\/p>\n<p>Jegede explained that to save the situation, the legal team of the former Vice President had to subpoena top officials of INEC to compel them to bring the required documents before the\u00a0court on their own.<\/p>\n<p>However in the end, the senior lawyer sought for a 24-hour adjournment to enable him approach the electoral body to do the needful.<\/p>\n<p>Following no objections from counsels\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0respondents\u00a0\u2014\u00a0<wbr \/>INEC represented by Abubakar Mahmud, Tinubu represented by Wole Olanipekun,\u00a0and the All Progressives Congress\u00a0with\u00a0Lateef Fagbemi as lead counsel\u00a0\u2014\u00a0Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani adjourned the matter till June 7.<\/p>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Presidential Election Petition Court in Abuja on Tuesday abruptly adjourned the petition of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against the election of President Bola Tinubu due to alleged refusal&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":105277,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[17],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-105276","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-exclusive"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
