The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has denied the allegation that he had a telephone conversation with President Bola Tinubu over petitions seeking to nullify the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.<\/p>\n
The CJN, through a statement that was issued by the Supreme Court on Wednesday, said he equally did not speak with the Director General of the Department of State Services, DSS, Mr. Yusuf Bichi, in a bid to influence members of the Presidential Election Petition Court, PEPC, sitting in Abuja, to deliver judgement in favour of President Tinubu.<\/p>\n
The statement, which was signed by the Director of Press and Information at the apex court, Dr. Festus Akande, read: \u201cIn view of the rumor currently circulating in the social media space that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola had a telephone conversation with His Excellency;<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2026President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Director General of the Department of State Service (DSS) with a view to pressurizing the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on the likely judgment to give, it is imperative to state clearly that there is no iota of truth in the narrative, as there was no such telephone conversation between the CJN and anyone.<\/p>\n
\u201cNigerians have been following the proceedings at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal with admirable enthusiasm.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, it is advisable we all sustain the tempo and follow it up to the end, instead of relapsing into the realm of speculations and rumor peddling that will not do anyone any good.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf this current trend of falsehood and mudslinging is sustained, our nation may not make the desired progress.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Courts are statutorily established to serve the best interest of the masses; and we are ever poised to do that to the best of our ability.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe wish to plead with everyone to cooperate with the judiciary to serve the country to its full capacity, as no one will ever be favoured against the other in any dispute.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe rule of law and supremacy of the Nigerian Constitution will always be upheld and applied in every matter that comes before the courts; as the facts presented and the subsisting laws must be applied in determining the merit or otherwise of each matter.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe public should be rest assured that justice will be done to all matters pending in the various courts across the country, irrespective of who is involved,\u201d it added.<\/p>\n
It will be recalled that a former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as well as candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, had gone to court to nullify President Tinubu\u2019s election.<\/p>\n
Both Atiku, who came second in the presidential election that held on February 25, and Obi who came third, are separately claiming that they won the contest which they said was however rigged in favour of President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.<\/p>\n
