{"id":106303,"date":"2023-07-20T21:43:59","date_gmt":"2023-07-20T20:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=106303"},"modified":"2023-07-20T21:43:59","modified_gmt":"2023-07-20T20:43:59","slug":"appeal-court-dismisses-report-on-pepc-judges-resignation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/appeal-court-dismisses-report-on-pepc-judges-resignation\/","title":{"rendered":"Appeal Court dismisses report on PEPC judge\u2019s resignation"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">The Court of Appeal has dismissed the report of the resignation of a member of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), Justice Moses Ugo, describing it as false and misleading.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to newsmen, on Thursday, in Abuja, the Chief Registrar of the Court, Mr Umar Bangari dismissed the report and appealed to the public to ignore the fake news in its entirety.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, there was no iota of truth in the report.<\/p>\n<p>The chief registrar explained that Justice Ugo was still on the panel of justices of the court handling the petitions by the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<\/p>\n<p>He faulted the report saying neither his office nor the information department of the court was contacted before dishing out what he called a false report.<\/p>\n<p>The Labour Party and its presidential candidate, Peter Obi and PDP alongside Abubakar Atiku are before the court challenging the declaration of Tinubu as president.<\/p>\n<p>The news of the purported resignation of Justice Ugo from the bench, citing demands \u201cto kneecap democracy\u201d, broke in the early hours of Thursday and spread rapidly on the internet.<\/p>\n<p>The online report stated that, Justice Ugo resigned from the bench, citing demands from the executive branch that he believed would destroy the country\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n<p>The online platform that carried the report said Justice Ugo alleged that siding with the government on the petitions challenging the election of President Bola Tinubu would be the \u201cdeath of Nigeria\u2019s democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He reportedly said that he could not in good conscience remain silent.<\/p>\n<p>According to the judges\u2019 purported statement, he was asked to \u201ccripple the independence of the judiciary\u201d by ruling in favor of a certain political candidate, whom he did not name.<\/p>\n<p>He was also said to have alleged that he was asked to suppress evidence and dismiss cases that could have an impact on the election.<\/p><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Court of Appeal has dismissed the report of the resignation of a member of the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC), Justice Moses Ugo, describing it as false and misleading.&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":106304,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-106303","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
