It is no longer news that some major opposition parties came together last month to form a strong force against the ruling party.\u00a0 After series of meetings and counter meetings they arrived at a joint name and acronym, this they called APC.<\/p>\n

Few days ago when a chieftain of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) and a stake holder in the newly formed All Progressive Congress (APC) Gen. Mohammadu Buhari said in the spirit and season of political coalition and merger that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has merged with INEC for the 2015 election, a lot of us believed this statement was nothing but a comic relief, as it is not only repugnant to constitutional provisions but it is also socially, morally and politically impossible. The electoral body is an umpire and as such cannot in anyway openly or secretly takes sides, more so as this is not constitutionally allowed.<\/p>\n

Let me state here, that I do not believe or share the ideology of this new party or any political party whatsoever in Nigeria. I strongly believe they are bunch of rogues who are only interested in the goose that lays the golden egg. I share the school of thought of the great Alexandra Pope which says, \u2018Political Party is the madness of many, for the gain of the few\u2019.\u00a0 However, elections should be free and fair. A high level playground must be maintained and all parties must be given the same privileges to exercise their legal rights. After all, election is a true test of popularity.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the electoral body seems to be playing a Pungi, which melody and rhythms only attract snakes.\u00a0 Suddenly, news emanating from the office of the professor of political science, has it that some group of people have written to the electoral commission to register a political party to be named African Peoples Congress which coincidentally shares the same acronym with the newly merged party. Setting the record straight, the Electoral Act is very clear on registration of political parties which evidently is based on priority – on first come, first serve.<\/p>\n

However, it is intriguing that at a time when INEC seems to be combing out inactive and \u201csiddonlook\u201d groups (some of which cannot even conduct a proper primary election), from the list of political parties, it is also planning to register another \u2018Dundee\u2019.\u00a0 Currently just eight political parties are holding one office or another.\u00a0 With the merger of four out of these parties, the country\u2019s political scene is set for a revolution. It is indeed normal for the ruling party to strategise on how to remain in power but the least excepted tactics is moving against the merger of the opposition parties with INEC. The statement and sign language of the electoral body is leaving us in doubt and if not properly checked it may concretize the assumption of Gen. Mohammadu Buhari that really INEC has merged with the PDP.<\/p>\n

The president being the current \u201ccontroller-general\u201d of the ruling party and an acclaimed PhD holder(I still haven\u2019t laid my hands on his Thesis) should have realized by now that moves such as this will only keep promoting the name of the opposition party and winning to their camp, sentiment of the masses. Now Nigerians have started seeing the current statement from the electoral commission has a move towards injustice thereby giving the not-yet-registered party the people\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n

Above all, any attempt or plan to sideline the newly formed party (All Progressive Congress) from participating in the next general election is a call to anarchy and civil unrest. Like Dr. Reuben Abati said we are \u2018Children of Anger\u2019 and in a country where the citizens are psychologically boiling from the escalating level of corruption and societal neglect coupled with the forcefully suppressed anger of the subsidy protest. It is not just a tale of seating on a keg of gun powder but rather a suicide attempt. Nigeria presently is in a fragile state, the people no longer need someone or something to incite them but what they require is just a little excuse to strike, and if the president mistakenly gives such opportunity then it might end up being a \u2018preview copy\u2019 \u2013 to put it colloquially; no one in the presidency can finish the one minute scene.<\/p>\n

The destiny of the People\u2019s Democratic Party lies in the hands of the president and the state governors, there is still time to make amends.\u00a0 A cue can be taken from one of my publications titled \u2018The Goodluck in my dream\u2019 http:\/\/saharareporters.com\/article\/goodluck-my-dream.\u00a0 Let\u2019s stop giving out presidential pardons to crooks and criminals, national awards to rogues and thieves. Concentrate more on the people rather than the capitalists, reduce food consumption in the presidency and only stick to cassava bread (I don\u2019t think that would cost up to a billion naira yearly), forget the annexing of African first ladies office in Nigeria, provide the basic social amenities, talk less and do more.<\/p>\n

Nigeria is a big name, our history and culture is bigger. We have a lot to lose if the nation is thrown into complete turmoil just because we couldn\u2019t play politics wisely. Libya, Egypt, Tunisia are still paying for the springs they embarked upon years ago, Nigeria can not survive another protest. Yes, the PDP might claim INEC is an independent body but with a constitution that gives the president the power to nominate its chairman, he who plays the piper, dictates the tune.<\/p>\n

If the president would lose in 2015 it should be honourably, it would be a big shame for Nigeria and Africa to witness another \u201cGaddafilarization\u201d.<\/p>\n
