{"id":107701,"date":"2023-09-11T09:37:03","date_gmt":"2023-09-11T08:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=107701"},"modified":"2023-09-11T09:37:03","modified_gmt":"2023-09-11T08:37:03","slug":"niger-rep-macron-refuses-juntas-demand-to-withdraw-french-forces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/niger-rep-macron-refuses-juntas-demand-to-withdraw-french-forces\/","title":{"rendered":"Niger Rep: Macron Refuses Junta\u2019s Demand to Withdraw French Forces"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\">French President Emmanuel Macron rejected a demand from Niger\u2019s military rulers to withdraw its troops from the country after a coup strained relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we redeploy, I would do it only at the request of President Bazoum,\u201d Macron said, referring to Niger\u2019s ousted leader, as the G-20 summit wrapped up in New Delhi, India, on Sunday. \u201cWe don\u2019t recognize any legitimacy in the declarations from the putschists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His comments came after the ruling junta said France was ignoring its request for the 1,500 French troops stationed in Niger to leave the country by September 3, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Nigerien and French military officers met earlier this month to discuss a plan for a French troop withdrawal from Niger, a junta Spokesperson said late Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of today, there\u2019s been no progress regarding the implementation of the plan,\u201d Colonel-Major Amadou Abdramane said in a statement on public broadcaster Tele Sahel.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions between Niger and its ex-colonial power have grown since the junta ousted President Mohamed Bazoum in a July 26 coup and severed military ties with France. Macron has said he would back a decision by the Economic Community of West African States to use force to restore democracy \u2014 though the regional bloc has backed off the threat and said diplomacy is its priority.<\/p>\n<p>Abdramane also said France was deploying troops in several West African countries as part of preparations for a possible regional military intervention aimed at ousting the junta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrance continues to deploy its forces in several Ecowas countries as part of preparations for an attack on Niger in collaboration with the regional bloc,\u201d Abdramane said.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesman for the Ecowas Commissioner said he wasn\u2019t authorized to speak on the matter.
