{"id":108689,"date":"2023-10-17T11:57:47","date_gmt":"2023-10-17T10:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=108689"},"modified":"2023-10-17T11:57:47","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T10:57:47","slug":"reported-twists-as-lp-candidate-tells-appeal-court-to-sack-orji-kalu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/reported-twists-as-lp-candidate-tells-appeal-court-to-sack-orji-kalu\/","title":{"rendered":"Reported twists as LP candidate tells Appeal Court to sack Orji Kalu"},"content":{"rendered":"<div dir=\"auto\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Abia North, Nnamdi Iro Orji, has filed an appeal with the court, requesting the disqualification of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n<p>Orji\u2019s appeal, submitted by his lead counsel, Bert C. Iqwilo, SAN, was based on three grounds.<\/p>\n<p>He argued that Kalu\u2019s admission at an Abuja Federal High Court, stating he should not be retried due to a previous conviction for corruption, should disqualify him.<\/p>\n<p>Orji also contended that the election was not conducted according to the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022, as voting did not take place in some polling units.<\/p>\n<p>Orji asserted that Kalu\u2019s conviction for fraud, less than ten years before the election, rendered him ineligible to contest.<\/p>\n<p>Orji called attention to the tribunal\u2019s oversight of evidence indicating invalidity due to corrupt practices or non-compliance with electoral laws, urging the appellate court to rule in his favor.<\/p>\n<p>In the election, Kalu was declared the winner with 30,805 votes, while the LP candidate received 27,540 votes.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, Kalu\u2019s conviction by the Federal High Court \u201cfor the offence of fraud (which is an offence that involves dishonesty) on the 5th day of December, 2019, at the conclusion of the trial of the 1st Respondent in Charge No. FHC\/ABJ\/CR\/56\/07, Federal Republic of Nigeria v.
