{"id":108745,"date":"2023-10-19T16:49:01","date_gmt":"2023-10-19T15:49:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=108745"},"modified":"2023-10-19T16:49:01","modified_gmt":"2023-10-19T15:49:01","slug":"4000-inmates-languishing-in-jail-unable-to-pay-n500m-fines-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/4000-inmates-languishing-in-jail-unable-to-pay-n500m-fines-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"4,000 inmates languishing in jail unable to pay N500m fines \u2014 Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1780190553259278748\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said over 4,000 inmates held in custodial centres across the country were unable to pay N500 million in fines.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe minister said he had met with some private organisations to raise the money.<\/p>\n<p>Tunji-Ojo assured that in the next four weeks, the fines would be cleared and the inmates would be released.<\/p>\n<p>The Minister spoke on Thursday during an interview on Arise News monitored by our correspondent.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cImmediately I resumed, I set up a committee to review the situation at our correctional centres. We discovered that over 4,000 inmates are in custody due to their inability to pay fines which is about N500 million. We have gone far with private organisations to put this money together.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n\u201cI am sure within the next four weeks, we will be able to pay these fines for the 4,000 inmates which will help us in decongesting our custodial centres. \u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the decongestion of the custodial centres is not the sole responsibility of the ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The minister said he had been discussing with the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, to combat the issue of awaiting trial inmates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe decongestion of our custodial centres is not the sole responsibility of the ministry.
