{"id":109601,"date":"2023-12-08T20:23:09","date_gmt":"2023-12-08T19:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=109601"},"modified":"2023-12-08T20:23:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-08T19:23:09","slug":"fake-naira-notes-in-circulation-cbn-raises-alarm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/fake-naira-notes-in-circulation-cbn-raises-alarm\/","title":{"rendered":"Fake naira notes in circulation, CBN raises alarm"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gs\">\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\":oe\" class=\"ii gt\">\n<div id=\":od\" class=\"a3s aiL \">\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned the general public to be vigilant, stating that fake naira banknotes are in circulation.<\/p>\n<p>CBN\u2019s acting spokesperson, Hakama Ali, made this known in a statement on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe attention of the CBN has been drawn to the circulation of counterfeit banknotes, especially higher denominations by some individuals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ali said that the fake naira notes were mainly used for transactions in food markets and other commercial centres across major cities in the country.<\/p>\n<p>She said that any person found complicit in the circulation of the counterfeit currency notes would face severe sanctions.<\/p>\n<p>The acting spokesperson said that the law provides punishment by a term of imprisonment of not less than five years, for any person found culpable of counterfeiting naira notes or any other legal tender in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CBN is in constant collaboration with relevant security and financial agencies to confiscate fake Naira banknotes, arrest and prosecute counterfeiters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMembers of the public are also encouraged to report anyone suspected of having counterfeit naira notes to the nearest police station, branch of the CBN, or via\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:contactcbn@cbn.gov.ng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contactcbn@cbn.gov.ng<\/a>,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She enjoined all deposit money banks, financial houses and bureaux de change and the general public to be more vigilant.<\/p>\n<p>Sidi Ali urged them to take all necessary precautionary measures to curtail the acceptance and distribution of fake naira notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, the general public is encouraged to embrace alternative modes of payment for day-to-day transactions to mitigate the risk of spreading counterfeit banknotes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"adL\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"adL\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"hi\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"WhmR8e\" data-hash=\"0\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned the general public to be vigilant, stating that fake naira banknotes are in circulation.
