{"id":110059,"date":"2024-01-10T20:04:27","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T19:04:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=110059"},"modified":"2024-01-10T20:04:27","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T19:04:27","slug":"abia-governorship-poll-supreme-court-reserves-judgment-in-pdps-appeal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/abia-governorship-poll-supreme-court-reserves-judgment-in-pdps-appeal\/","title":{"rendered":"Abia governorship poll: Supreme Court reserves judgment in PDP\u2019s appeal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved judgment in an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Okey Ahiwe, seeking the nullification of the election of Alex Oti as the Governor of Abia.<br \/>\nJustice John Okoro reserved the judgment to a date to be communicated to parties after taking their final arguments.<br \/>\nAlthough PDP\u2019s legal team was led by the immediate past Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice (AGF), Abubakar Malami SAN, the arguments were however presented by Uche Ihediuwa, SAN.<br \/>\nWhile presenting the PDP\u2019s submissions, Ihediuwa alleged that Ahiwe was short-changed with over 84,000 votes during the collation of the governorship election results.<br \/>\nThe lawyer alleged that the agent of the PDP was chased away at the collation center and as such, was not obliged a copy of the results as required by law.<br \/>\nHe claimed that his client had to approach the All Progressives Congress (APC) before it could access results sheets and discovered the alleged malpractices.<br \/>\nHowever, Otti, represented by Abiodun Owonikoko, SAN, asked the apex court to dismiss the appeal for want of merit.<br \/>\nOwonikoko informed the court that Otti scored over 174,000 votes at the March 18, 2023 governorship election to emerge victorious adding that even if the purported 84,000\u00a0 short-changed votes were added to PDP, the appellants would still not win.<br \/>\nHe said that a purported result sheet produced by the PDP before the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal was rejected because it could not be read by the witness of the party.<br \/>\nIt will be recalled that Otti of the LP\u00a0 was declared the winner of the governorship election in the Abia\u00a0 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on March 22.<br \/>\nHe polled 175,466 votes to defeat his closest rival, Ahiwe of the PDP, who scored 88,529 votes.<br \/>\nAhiwe and the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC),\u00a0 Ikechi Emenike, separately challenged Otti\u2019s victory at the tribunal.<br \/>\nThe tribunal in its judgment on October 6, 2023 dismissed the petitions by Ahiwe and Emenike and affirmed Otti\u2019s election.<br \/>\nThe judgment of the tribunal was later affirmed by the Court of Appeal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"yj6qo\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"adL\"><\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved judgment in an appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Okey Ahiwe, seeking the nullification of the election of&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":110060,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-110059","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
