{"id":110253,"date":"2024-01-22T02:39:08","date_gmt":"2024-01-22T01:39:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=110253"},"modified":"2024-01-22T02:39:08","modified_gmt":"2024-01-22T01:39:08","slug":"nigerian-woman-wins-racial-profiling-case-against-us-pharmaceutical-firm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/other-news\/nigerian-woman-wins-racial-profiling-case-against-us-pharmaceutical-firm\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigerian Woman Wins Racial Profiling Case against US Pharmaceutical Firm"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1788718996407615346\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tolulope Fayokun, a senior manager at Johnson &amp; Johnson, has successfully won a discrimination case against the company, alleging racial profiling by her boss, Alessandra Toro.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nFayokun had dragged the pharmaceutical company before an employment tribunal after she was dismissed in early 2020, with the tribunal determining that Toro had discriminated against her by referring to her Nigerian origins.<\/p>\n<p>The tribunal heard that Fayokun\u2019s relationship with Toro, whom Fayokun \u2013 a dual British and Nigerian national \u2013 reported to and was the Director for Strategic Insights and Analytics at J&amp;J, took a detrimental turn when she was presented with a document outlining \u2018Nigerian traits.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Toro had conducted research into Nigerian workplaces, suggesting that Fayokun was lazy and operated on \u2018African time,\u2019 implying a lack of punctuality.<\/p>\n<p>Toro allegedly told Fayokun, \u201cI\u2019m different from Nigeria,\u201d highlighting differences in their perspectives on deadlines and workplace flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, after Fayokun\u2019s dismissal, she filed a lawsuit for race discrimination, leading to a tribunal judge\u2019s conclusion that she had been unfairly \u2018racially profiled.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The tribunal heard details of Fayokun\u2019s professional journey at Johnson &amp; Johnson, where she initially demonstrated strong leadership. However, as time passed, she began feeling overwhelmed by her workload, leading to strained relations with Toro. The relationship worsened during a work trip to the USA, and upon returning, Toro presented Fayokun with what she described as a \u2018racially profiling document.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>While Fayokun expressed her grievances against her bosses, Toro argued that she presented a report on \u2018cultural fluency\u2019 rather than racial profiling. Despite Toro\u2019s different perspective, the tribunal concluded that Fayokun had been discriminated against by the \u2018profiling exercise.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The compensation for Fayokun will be determined in a subsequent hearing.
