Some victims lay motionless in pools of blood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly there were bangs behind us \u2013 shots. A burst of firing \u2013 I do not know what,\u201d one witness, who asked not to be identified by name, told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA stampede began. Everyone ran to the escalator. Everyone was screaming; everyone was running,\u201d the witness added.<\/p>\n<p>Russian investigators said the death toll was more than 60. Health officials said about 145 people were wounded, of which about 60 were in critical condition.<\/p>\n<p>In the 2004 Beslan school siege, Islamist militants took more than 1,000 people, including hundreds of children, hostage.<\/p>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin was being updated by security chiefs about the situation, including Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the Kremlin said.<\/p>\n<p>Russian investigators published pictures of a Kalashnikov automatic weapon, vests with multiple spare magazines and bags of spent bullet casings.<\/p>\n<p>Islamic State, the militant group that once sought control over swathes of Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the attack, the group\u2019s Amaq agency said on Telegram.<\/p>\n<p>A grainy picture was published by some Russian media of two of the alleged attackers in a white car.<\/p>\n<p>The fate of the attackers was unclear as firefighters battled a massive blaze and emergency services evacuated hundreds of people while parts of the venue\u2019s roof collapsed.<\/p>\n<p>Islamic State said its fighters attacked on the outskirts of Moscow, \u201ckilling and wounding hundreds and causing great destruction to the place before they withdrew to their bases safely.\u201d The statement gave no further detail.<\/p>\n<p>The United States has intelligence confirming Islamic State\u2019s claim of responsibility for the shooting, a U.S. official said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The official said the United States had warned Russia in recent weeks of the possibility of an attack.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did warn the Russians appropriately,\u201d said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, without providing any additional details.<\/p>\n<p>The attack on Crocus City Hall, about 20 km (12 miles) from the Kremlin, comes just two weeks after the U.S. embassy in Russia warned that \u201cextremists\u201d had imminent plans for an attack in Moscow.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Camouflage-clad gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at concertgoers near Moscow in Russia on Friday, killing about 60 people and injuring 145 others.
