{"id":111718,"date":"2024-05-03T19:42:32","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T18:42:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=111718"},"modified":"2024-05-03T19:42:32","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T18:42:32","slug":"efcc-clamps-down-on-international-schools-charging-tuition-fees-in-dollars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/efcc-clamps-down-on-international-schools-charging-tuition-fees-in-dollars\/","title":{"rendered":"EFCC clamps down on international schools charging tuition fees in dollars"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1798055839322672552\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has placed international schools charging tuition in dollars and other foreign currencies under surveillance to reduce the pressure on the naira.<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe Head of Media and Publicity, EFCC, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the development to Pointblanknews.com.<\/p>\n<p>He said the agency would clamp down on schools and other organisations charging foreign currencies, stressing that it was illegal for schools, hotels and firms operating in the country to charge for services in foreign currencies.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the 7,000-man special task force on dollar racketeers operating across the EFCC zonal commands\u00a0was monitoring\u00a0the schools and other organisations that might be involved in the illegality.<\/p>\n<p>In a move to curb the free fall of the naira against the greenback, the ant-graft agency summoned the proprietors of private universities and other schools in February, charging tuition in dollars.<\/p>\n<p>Oyewale said it was illegal\u00a0for any business operating in the country to charge for its services in foreign denominations apart from the naira, vowing sanctions for any breach of the law.<\/p>\n<p>He stated, \u201cEveryone knows\u00a0that it\u00a0is illegal to charge in other denominations apart from the naira.\u00a0Whether in Chinese or American currency, any transaction\u00a0that\u00a0is\u00a0not denominated\u00a0in naira in Nigeria, the EFCC is against it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, the task force is in place to check that\u00a0and\u00a0Nigerians should be happy about that.\u00a0It is not just\u00a0schools,\u00a0hotels\u00a0but other entities across the country\u00a0that are doing this must come back\u00a0to the naira as our legal tender.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNaira is the symbol of our economy\u00a0and\u00a0everything that has to do with the economy in Nigeria must\u00a0be done\u00a0in naira.\u2019\u2019<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"mail-message-footer spacer collapsible\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has placed international schools charging tuition in dollars and other foreign currencies under surveillance to reduce the pressure on the naira.
