Senate president, Godswill Akpabio, on Monday, July 22, charged the members of the Senate ad-hoc committee investigating alleged economic sabotage in the petroleum sector to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable.<\/div>\n

\nThe Senate had recently raised alarm over the persistent importation of hazardous petroleum products and the influx of substandard diesel into the Nigerian market,<\/p>\n

Speaking while inaugurating the committee, Akpabio urged the Committee to approach the task with utmost diligence, transparency, and commitment.<\/p>\n

He said it is expedient and instructive that the committee acts decisively and with a sense of urgency.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must identify and hold accountable those responsible for these criminal acts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not merely an investigation; it is a rescue mission for our nation\u2019s future. The integrity and prosperity of Nigeria depend on our ability to safeguard our petroleum industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour mandate is to conduct a thorough investigation, leaving no stone unturned. Collaborate with relevant agencies, industry experts, and stakeholders to uncover the root causes of these economic sabotage activities and identify the perpetrators, their methods, and their networks.<\/p>\n

\u201cFurthermore, I urge you to propose robust and sustainable solutions to prevent future occurrences.<\/p>\n

\u201cStrengthen our regulatory frameworks, enhance security measures, and ensure that our legal and judicial systems are equipped to deal with offenders swiftly and effectively.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is also crucial to foster an environment of transparency and accountability within the industry to deter potential saboteurs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The President of the Senate told the committee members that the task before them was monumental but not insurmountable.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis industry, without a doubt, is the backbone of Nigeria\u2019s economy, and any threat to its integrity is a direct threat to the economic survival of our beloved nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe petroleum sector has been the lifeblood of our economy, providing the revenue that funds our infrastructure, education, healthcare, and numerous other vital sectors.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the shadow of economic sabotage looms large, threatening to destabilize this critical industry and, by extension, our nation\u2019s financial stability.<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the past few years, we have witnessed a concerning trend of alleged malpractices and economic sabotage within the petroleum sector.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese allegations range from illegal bunkering, pipeline vandalism, oil theft, and other nefarious activities that have collectively bled our economy dry.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe impact of these actions has been devastating, contributing significantly to our current economic downturn.<\/p>\n

\u201cRevenue losses from these illegal activities have deprived our nation of the funds needed for development and growth. They have undermined investor confidence, distorted market operations, and exacerbated our economic challenges.<\/p>\n
