The Federal Government has secured a grant of N2.8 billion from Google to boost artificial intelligence\u00a0 talent development across Nigeria, aiming to close skill gaps and position the country at the forefront of AI innovation in Africa.<\/p>\n
Announcing the partnership at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, stated that the Google grant will fund initiatives to train Nigerian youth and support AI startups, enhancing job opportunities and economic resilience nationwide.<\/p>\n

The grant is part of Google\u2019s $5.8 million commitment to digital skill development across sub-Saharan Africa, coming just a month after Nigeria\u2019s launch of a N100 million AI fund in collaboration with Google.<\/p>\n
Tijani highlighted the initiative\u2019s focus on key sectors including healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance, with selected AI startups playing a vital role in tackling local challenges and driving sustainable economic growth.<\/p>\n
He underscored that AI\u2019s potential as a development tool requires a robust local ecosystem, supported by strategic partnerships.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s clear the development we want in Nigeria can\u2019t come from government alone.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur role is to set the agenda, but initiatives like Google\u2019s are what will truly build the economy we envision,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
President of Google EMEA, Matt Brittin,\u00a0 said the grant will fund Nigeria\u2019s ongoing \u201c3 Million Technical Talents\u201d programme, which targets AI skill development for 20,000 Nigerians. Launched on October 13, the 3MTT programme is a four-year drive to strengthen Nigeria\u2019s technical talent pipeline, positioning the country as a net exporter of digital expertise.<\/p>\n
Brittin shared that through the initiative, Google aims to train 125,000 educators and empower 10 promising Nigerian AI startups with N100 million, alongside $3.5 million in Google Cloud Credits and mentorship from Google engineers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re providing N2.8 billion to the Data Scientists Network Foundation in support of the Minister\u2019s vision for AI growth in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis funding will advance AI skills and opportunities across the country,\u201d Brittin stated.<\/p>\n
