The birth of American nationhood in\u00a01776 gave the world a multi-dimensional transformative force that has made life more livable, and the future more predictable. In the process of engineering its unique democratic\u00a0experiment, it has spread its\u00a0tentacles\u00a0across the\u00a0globe, for good or for bad, depending on where you stand. There is\u00a0scarcely\u00a0any corner of the world where the \u2018American wonder\u2019 testimony is not\u00a0shared.\u00a0From\u00a0airplanes\u00a0to electricity, to television, to the internet, to social media\u00a0America has ruled the world and\u00a0received\u00a0a\u00a0bourgeoning amount of prosperity for its ingenuity and democratic credentials.<\/p>\n

The uniqueness of anything America, including its exceptional quality of leadership, the pioneering role of its scientific community,\u00a0the\u00a0eradication\u00a0of\u00a0worldwide\u00a0epidemics,the\u00a0destructive\u00a0prowess\u00a0of\u00a0its ammunition, the conquest of its colleges and universities, and the saving grace of the dollar after the second world war has\u00a0mesmerized the world and duped some to believe that\u00a0America\u00a0is\u00a0resoundingly\u00a0exceptional by all standards.\u00a0However,\u00a0some experts are prepared to debate whether such huge exploits stand on the pedestal of being\u00a0more\u00a0exceptional than other\u00a0Scandinavian\u00a0countries of central Europe.\u00a0In\u00a0my\u00a0opinion,\u00a0I concede that in a hugely deserving way, the world owes a lot of\u00a0gratitude\u00a0and respect to\u00a0America\u00a0for leading the\u00a0way to escape routes\u00a0each time the world finds itself ata\u00a0crossroads. More than any other country, America has always demonstrated its attempt to squeeze water out of stone when theworld needs it most.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, in the\u00a0checkered\u00a0journey of America, there have\u00a0been\u00a0deeply embarrassing and highly depressing occasions when it could easily pass as an ordinary third-world country, the so-called banana republic, especially one whose banana fruit was harvested prematurely.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The America\u00a0We\u00a0Know<\/p>\n

Before long, bizarre and explosive developments in theAmerican political landscape combined with the seeming rabid ignorance of the American electorate\u00a0to shift the\u00a0debate about American exceptionalism to the front burner of public discourse.What is not debated,\u00a0unfortunately, is the fact that if America has lost its political and economic exceptionalism, it\u2019s the making of America itself,\u00a0fueled\u00a0by its unprovoked restiveness and\u00a0the\u00a0unbridled quest to dictate to the world, even when its actions\u00a0are\u00a0contradictory at best, and hypocritical at worst.<\/p>\n

Perhaps nothing has exposed the underbelly of America\u2019s\u00a0houseof hollow than the 2016 presidential elections. But that, again, paled into\u00a0insignificant\u00a0side-show when compared with the \u201chouse of horror\u2019 of 2024 elections. The drama of the 2024 elections started by presenting Americans\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0arduous task of\u00a0deciding\u00a0who will be the Commander-in-Chief between a fall-prone, gaffe\u00a0machine octogenarian, and a reality TV clown, deranged chaos agent whose meaningless slogan to \u2018make America great again\u2019 only\u00a0found\u00a0meaning\u00a0in his\u00a0admiration for, and capitulation to \u2018strong men\u2019 like Kim Jung un and Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n

It sent shock waves to discerning minds that the best\u00a0America could present as presidential\u00a0candidates are\u00a0an\u00a0exhausted man who would have been 81 years\u00a0old\u00a0at\u00a0the\u00a0inauguration on January 20 (making him the oldest president), a twice-impeached, four-times criminally indicted conman who has successfully dragged the once\u00a0revered\u00a0Supreme\u00a0Court into the hyper-politicized and integrity-challenged arena of presidential election. His demand for absolute presidential immunity over his scheme to undo the clear loss of\u00a0the\u00a02020 presidential election is reverberating in capital cities\u00a0across\u00a0the globe, to the cheering\u00a0of our enemies, and the chagrin of our friends.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

America the\u00a0Bad<\/p>\n

As\u00a0the current presidential cycle picks up steam, President Biden\u2019s \u2018decision\u2019 not to seek\u00a0reelection\u00a0after his disastrous performance\u00a0at\u00a0the first debate threw up Kamala Harris, a much younger,\u00a0no-nonsense\u00a0senate questioner, who restored the hope of Democrats, and instantly turned the tables on Republicans who have made\u00a0Biden’s\u00a0age a political talking-point. Now, they\u00a0have to\u00a0defend the candidacy of\u00a078-year-old\u00a0Doland Trump, who is currently the oldest presidential\u00a0nominee\u00a0of\u00a0a\u00a0major\u00a0political party in the US, ever.\u00a0The same\u00a0Republicans, including the do-nothing 118th\u00a0Congress dominated by\u00a0a\u00a0highly dysfunctional and bitterly divided GOP, were finding it difficult to define Harris after being disarmed by Biden\u2019s sudden evaporation.\u00a0So,\u00a0they settled on her liberal voting records, ridiculed her as a \u2018Border Czar\u2019, and suggested that she would be the first DEI president. Surprisingly, some\u00a0Republicans\u00a0have alleged without substantiation that Harris\u00a0actually slept\u00a0her way into and upwards in California politics.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump, maybe, for lack of his trademark \u2018birther conspiracy theory,\u2019 has resorted to insults and innuendos by calling her \u2018laughing Kamala,\u2019 and insisting that she is crazy. And to him, laughter is a disqualifying\u00a0characteristic,\u00a0just like his dubious claim of Obama\u2019s place of birth and funny name snowballed into a conspiracy theory of disqualification.<\/p>\n

In the run-up to the election, the nasty rhetoric and noisy vulgar, even by Trump\u2019s standard, are chorused by\u00a0the\u00a0MAGA crowd, which\u00a0has demonstrated that nothing said or done by their \u2018king\u2019 is disqualifying enough to abandon his sinking ship. Even the promise to be a dictator for one day, and use the military inside\u00a0America, against protesting American citizens have not penetrated their thick skulls.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

No Holds Barred<\/p>\n

Paradoxically,\u00a0American evangelicalism is not spared by the wrecking ball wielded by the former president. The once revered movement has made a public mockery of itself by its sheepishcrowning of the \u2018Christian\u00a0Trump\u2019 who could not mention\u00a0even one\u00a0verse of the bible to support \u2018what his faith means to him.\u2019 The conscious efforts at a\u00a0\u2018Trump coronation\u2019\u00a0that turned the bible-wielding,\u00a0tongue-speaking Christians\u00a0into \u2018idol worshippers\u2019 as they worshipped and prayed over the golden Trump statue at CPAC, has taken a frightening dimension as they\u00a0bolster\u00a0his disingenuous devices to desecrate\u00a0and discredit institutions that tend to hold him accountable,\u00a0check\u00a0his bogus claims\u00a0of unlimited power, or attempt to contradict his \u2018alternate truth\u2019 project. In this\u00a0regard, Mr. Trump has somewhat succeeded\u00a0in\u00a0sowing\u00a0needless doubt among American voters, bullied the ebullient\u00a0American news media, and\u00a0dragged\u00a0the Supreme Court\u00a0into the mud of public\u00a0vilification.<\/p>\n

The unrestrained display of crass\u00a0ignorance\u00a0and\u00a0double-speakare\u00a0defining\u00a0issues as we vote for president in\u00a0a\u00a0few hours. This electoral period has jolted our political, economic, and military allies, who have not forgotten how Mr. Trump bullied NATO members with\u00a0transactional\u00a0leadership (where\u00a0everything was\u00a0reduced\u00a0to dollars\u00a0and cents), threatened\u00a0to withdraw\u00a0the US\u00a0from the WHO, and insisted\u00a0on\u00a0renegotiating age-long bilateral agreements.<\/p>\n

Mr.\u00a0Trump\u2019s\u00a0fixation on\u00a0immigration\u00a0is questionable. For a man who has been married to two\u00a0immigrants, and whose grandfather was an immigrant, you would expect that he\u00a0has\u00a0some rudimentary understanding of immigration,\u00a0but that is not the case.\u00a0To him, every immigration to the US, whether illegal or not, is bad for\u00a0the\u00a0American economy and crime statistics. He has promised, again, to deport all illegal immigrants. And the pertinent question to ask is:\u00a0how many people did he deport in his first term of chaos and\u00a0confusion? Or was he busy\u00a0buildingthe big, tall wall that Mexico paid for, and forgot to conduct mass deportation?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Soul of\u00a0Uncle Sam\u00a0is on the Line<\/p>\n

The vice\u00a0president, Kamala Harris is not a particularly excellent presidential candidate by\u00a0any\u00a0stretch, she has been sketchy on some important economic issues, evasive on some traditional Democratic strongholds, and lacked\u00a0specifics of\u00a0her own policy proposals,\u00a0She\u00a0will inherit some of the political\u00a0baggage\u00a0of Biden\u2019s\u00a0administration\u00a0since she is part of the era. But a simple juxtaposition of the two candidates will reveal a compelling\u00a0contrast\u00a0that looks like darkness and light. Mr. Trump is hoping to dispense distributive justice with his long and growing list of \u2018enemies within\u2019 who\u00a0should\u00a0be nailed and\u00a0jailed, while Mrs. Harris\u00a0is expecting to invite and unite diverse shades of Americans, including those who disagree with her. The former president is bent on being a dictator and apprentice fascist, while the vice president has\u00a0promised\u00a0to respect and entrench the rule of law.<\/p>\n

Mr. Trump has\u00a0degraded\u00a0and disgraced the time-tested American electoral system and vowed to contest it, again, if he loses.\u00a0His opponent has undertaken to honor and respect the wishes of\u00a0Americans\u00a0as expressed.\u00a0However, Mr.\u00a0Trump’s\u00a0supporters\u00a0have touted the fact that he was\u00a0good\u00a0for the economy because they had more money in their pockets, and that inflation was low.Accordingly,\u00a0economists\u00a0have questioned the cost of that\u00a0\u2018economic\u00a0goodness\u2019\u00a0to the average American when the hefty tax cut was for wealthy people,\u00a0those in the same economic club\u00a0as\u00a0him. They also pointed\u00a0out\u00a0that\u00a0there\u00a0were\u00a0no disruptive supply chain problems, and\u00a0that\u00a0the\u00a0high energy cost caused by Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine was absent during his presidency.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Are we there Yet?<\/p>\n

As America enters the next phase of its national life, the roadpromises\u00a0to be bumpy and blistering. If Trump wins the 2024 presidency, his erratic, disruptive anti-establishment stance,\u00a0will combine\u00a0with the foolery of\u00a0the\u00a0MAGA foot soldiers\u00a0to\u00a0make the country weaker and poorer. If Mrs. Harris wins, Congressional\u00a0GOP\u00a0and Trump stooges will make the country\u00a0ungovernable.<\/p>\n

Taking\u00a0due\u00a0cognizance\u00a0of the central significance of the 2024 presidential election,\u00a0the twists\u00a0and turns as seconds turn to minutes,\u00a0and\u00a0the huge consequences of its\u00a0eventual\u00a0outcome, whoever takes the oath of office as\u00a0America\u2019s\u00a047th\u00a0president on January 20, 2025,\u00a0would\u00a0have the\u00a0unenviable\u00a0responsibility to\u00a0define\u00a02024 as America\u2019s annus horribilis or its annus mirabilis.<\/p>\n
