Some traditional rulers in Abia have\u00a0 expressed happiness over the commencement of the construction of the Nkporo-Abiriba-Ohafia Road in Abia to Osso Edda Road in Ebonyi by the Federal Government.<\/p>\n
The rulers made the commendation in interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, when the Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, launched the commencement of the job at the Abia end of the road.<\/p>\n
They expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for awarding the contract for the project and said its completion would alleviate the suffering of the people.<\/p>\n
Eze Patrick Ogbuagu, the traditional ruler of Nkporo Autonomous Community, described the commencement of the work as \u2018\u2019an answer to many years of crying for the government to come to our aid\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n
Ogbuagu, who described his community as predominantly agrarian, said that the road would help farmers to transport their farm produce to other parts of the state.<\/p>\n
He said it was regrettable that a lot of farm produce rotted away after every harvest because of the difficulties faced by farmers in transporting their produce.<\/p>\n
On his part, , Eze Samuel Egbem-Okorie,\u00a0 the traditional ruler of Egbeme-Oha Ohafia, said that the community had suffered untold hardship as a result of the deplorable condition of the road.<\/p>\n
Okorie paid special tribute to the federal and state governments as well as the National Assembly members from the area for attracting the project.<\/p>\n
He said that the road would promote socio-economic activities in the area.<\/p>\n
In his contribution, the traditional ruler of Ukwa Nkporo, Eze John Mba, said that the road, which leads to Ebonyi, would usher in great economic transformation in the area.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2019Our people have suffered a lot for many decades. When rain falls, our people would have no access to the outside world,\u2019\u2019 Mba said.<\/p>\n
He said that many people died during the struggle to attract government\u2019s attention but thanked God that he was alive to witness the commencement of work on the road.<\/p>\n
The rulers said past administrations made promises to construct the road to no avail.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2019Past administrations made unfulfilled promises but this present administration together with our representatives has worked hard to ensure the realisation of the road,\u2019\u2019 Mba said.<\/p>\n
They appealed to the federal and state governments as well as their representatives to spare no efforts in ensuring that the project was fully realised.<\/p>\n
NAN learnt that the 37km road, which cost N2.1 billion, was attracted through the efforts of Sen. Uche Chukwumerije (Abia North), and Rep. Arua Arunsi, the member for Ohafia\/Arochukwu\u00a0 constituency.<\/p>\n
Arunsi said at the ceremony that the road was abandoned for many years and expressed joy that it was being done during his tenure.<\/p>\n
