{"id":115487,"date":"2024-12-02T21:59:31","date_gmt":"2024-12-02T20:59:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=115487"},"modified":"2024-12-02T21:59:31","modified_gmt":"2024-12-02T20:59:31","slug":"finnish-police-simon-ekpas-offence-not-bailable","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/finnish-police-simon-ekpas-offence-not-bailable\/","title":{"rendered":"Finnish police: Simon Ekpa\u2019s offence not bailable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Finnish police say Simon Ekpa, the self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will remain in custody until his trial.<\/p>\n<p>The police said the Finnish legal system does not permit his bail due to the nature of the offence he is being held for.<\/p>\n<p>On November 21, law enforcement in the northern European nation arrested the pro-Biafra agitator.<\/p>\n<p>He was subsequently sent to prison by the district court of P\u00e4ij\u00e4t-H\u00e4me for \u201cspreading terrorist propaganda on social media\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ekpa was said to have committed the crime in 2021 in Lahti municipality.<\/p>\n<p>He is accused of instigating violence and inciting terror in the south-east of Nigeria through his social media pages.<\/p>\n<p>The federal government has been demanding the extradition of Ekpa, a dual citizen of Finland and Nigeria, for prosecution.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Ekpa is scheduled to face charges in May 2025.<\/p>\n<p>When asked if Ekpa\u2019s charges were bailable, Mikko Laaksonen, a senior detective superintendent at Finland\u2019s National Bureau of Investigation, in an email sent to PUNCH on Saturday, said: \u201cFinnish criminal procedure\/coercive measures do not recognise bail procedure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur procedure is based on, depending on the case, remand or travel ban as coercive measures for limiting the freedom of movement for persons suspected of offences to which such measures are applicable,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Finnish police say Simon Ekpa, the self-acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), will remain in custody until his trial.
