{"id":115735,"date":"2024-12-16T20:37:33","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T19:37:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=115735"},"modified":"2024-12-16T20:37:33","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T19:37:33","slug":"counterterrorism-fg-secures-conviction-of-200-suspects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/counterterrorism-fg-secures-conviction-of-200-suspects\/","title":{"rendered":"Counterterrorism: FG secures conviction of 200 suspects\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1818541492755153241\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Federal Government of Nigeria has secured the conviction of more than 200 terrorists successfully prosecuted during the just-concluded Phase Six Terrorism Trials held at the Kainji Detention Facility from December 9 to December 13.<\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1818541492755153241-content\" class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThis is contained in a statement from the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), on Sunday in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The centre said the government has achieved a major milestone in its unwavering campaign against terrorism, including Boko Haram insurgency, IPOB insurrection, and banditry.<\/p>\n<p>According to NCTC, a total of 237 cases were heard during the trials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe convicted individuals received various sentences, ranging from the death penalty to life imprisonment and terms of 20 to 70 years, reflecting the severity of their crimes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmong those sentenced to the maximum penalty were individuals found guilty of heinous offences, including attacks on women and children, destruction of religious sites, the slaughter of innocent civilians, and the abduction of women and children in a brutal assault at Gina Kara Kai community in Borno.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, individuals involved in terrorism financing \u2013 a critical enabler of violent activities \u2013 were sentenced to life imprisonment, underscoring the Federal Government\u2019s unyielding resolve to dismantle all aspects of terrorist networks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis achievement highlights the government\u2019s commitment to delivering justice for victims of terrorism and safeguarding the lives and property of all Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trials, presided over by five Federal High Court judges, were conducted in strict compliance with international standards of justice, marking a critical step in restoring peace and stability in affected regions across the country,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The statement also mentioned that the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, under the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation, oversaw the trials in collaboration with NCTC-ONSA.
