The UK High Court will on February 13 commence hearings in the case between Shell and the Ogale and Bille communities in Rivers State, a landmark legal battle over oil pollution in Nigeria\u2019s Niger Delta.<\/p>\n
This trial represents a crucial step in the decade-long fight for corporate accountability, as the communities seek justice for the environmental devastation they said was caused by Shell\u2019s operations.<\/p>\n
Shell Plc, a British multinational oil and gas giant headquartered in London, England, is Nigeria\u2019s oldest energy company.<\/p>\n
The Preliminary Issues Trial of Nigerian Law, set to run until March 10, will determine key legal questions before a full trial on claims that Shell\u2019s operations caused widespread environmental destruction, leaving thousands of people without access to clean drinking water and destroying their livelihoods.<\/p>\n
This was disclosed in a Monday statement released by Amnesty International titled, \u201cNigerian residents take Shell to UK High Court following 10-year fight for justice.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Bille and Ogale communities have lived with the devastating impact of oil pollution for years,\u201d said Isa Sanusi, Amnesty International\u2019s Country Director for Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The statement added, \u201cOil companies, particularly Shell, exposed them to multiple spills that have done permanent damage to farmlands, waterways, and drinking water\u2014leaving them unable to farm or fish.\u201d<\/p>\n
The legal action, led by UK law firm Leigh Day, comes after years of delays.<\/p>\n
Shell had argued it was not legally responsible for the pollution, but on December 6, 2024, the UK Court of Appeal ruled that the case could proceed.<\/p>\n
\u201cWater contamination and other impacts affect even babies, who in some cases are born with deformities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese communities deserve justice and effective remediation, and I hope this long-overdue trial goes some way to providing it,\u201d Sanusi added.<\/p>\n
Amnesty International, which has spent over 20 years documenting the environmental and human rights impact of Shell\u2019s operations in the Niger Delta, is calling on the oil giant to take full responsibility.<\/p>\n
The group urged Shell to engage with affected communities and provide a comprehensive remediation plan, including details of ongoing clean-up efforts and compensation for those impacted.<\/p>\n
With the trial now imminent, the case is expected to set a global precedent for holding multinational corporations accountable for environmental damage in foreign countries, the Amnesty International release\u00a0asserted.<\/p>\n
