The Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has commended security operatives for achieving a zero-gunshot record\u2014from both police officers and suspected criminals\u2014over the past month.<\/p>\n
Speaking with journalists in his office, Orutugu described the milestone as a significant achievement, highlighting it as a clear indication that the people of Anambra State are embracing peace and a crime-free environment.<\/p>\n
Before Orutugu assumed office in February 2025, Anambra had been grappling with serious insecurity, prompting the state government to ban the activities of certain categories of native doctors and fake pastors suspected of aiding crime.<\/p>\n
He noted that Anambra, a state renowned for its rich human resources and legendary figures such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, deserves lasting peace.<\/p>\n
The Commissioner of Police emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, particularly in Onitsha, which houses the largest market in Nigeria and attracts traders from across the country and beyond.<\/p>\n
He observed that the improved security situation in the past month is gradually encouraging more visitors and businesses to return to the state.<\/p>\n
Orutugu also expressed concern over the past culture of sit-at-home protests on workdays, which he said had no justification. However, he noted with satisfaction that things are changing for the better.<\/p>\n
He predicted that enduring peace would continue in the state, but warned that the police would not tolerate any individuals or groups with criminal intentions.<\/p>\n
