{"id":117219,"date":"2025-04-10T16:49:36","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T15:49:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=117219"},"modified":"2025-04-10T16:49:36","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T15:49:36","slug":"fg-reaffirms-plans-to-deepen-draft-level-at-apapa-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/fg-reaffirms-plans-to-deepen-draft-level-at-apapa-port\/","title":{"rendered":"FG Reaffirms Plans to Deepen Draft Level at Apapa Port"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Myke Agunwa<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">As part of efforts to reduce the cost of importation of goods through improved turnaround time and seamless berthing of large vessels, the Federal government on Wednesday renewed its commitment to deepening the draft levels at the Apapa port terminal.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was made known in Abuja by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola while receiving a high-level delegation from APM Terminals in his office.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Minister who acknowledged the company\u2019s commitment to investing an additional $500m in expanding its areas of operations in Nigeria, described APM as a model for terminal operations in the country.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said, \u201cWe are pleased with the quality of infrastructure that APM Terminals has delivered at the Lagos Port Complex, Apapa. The standard you have set should be the minimum benchmark for other terminal operators across the country.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis fresh $500m investment must align with our broader agenda to modernize the Western ports and enhance port competitiveness. The Eastern ports will also not be left behind \u2014 we are determined to ensure a holistic upgrade of all Nigerian ports.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Oyetola, \u201cThe Federal Government is committed to deepening draft levels at the Lagos ports to a minimum of 16 metres, which will allow for the berthing of larger vessels, improve turnaround time, and reduce shipping costs\u201d.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He further disclosed that the government is actively pursuing\u00a0full\u00a0port modernization and automation,\u00a0working in close collaboration\u00a0with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to deploy scanners and eliminate the heavy reliance on physical cargo examinations.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWith our modernization efforts, we are confident that Nigerian ports will soon rank among the best in the world. Our goal is to create a maritime environment that is efficient, transparent, and attractive to both local and international investors,\u201d the Minister added.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his remarks, Mr. Peter Wikstrom expressed enthusiasm about the ongoing transformation in Nigeria\u2019s maritime sector.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is my first visit to Nigeria, and I\u2019m impressed by the scale of opportunity here,\u201d he said. Wikstrom pointed out that Nigeria, as Africa\u2019s largest economy, is a strategic investment destination for APM Terminals.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said APM Terminals has operated in Nigeria for over 20 years and sees a promising future\u00a0for the country.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He affirmed that the fresh investment will be channelled towards expanding terminal capacity, enhancing cargo handling efficiency, and supporting the Federal Government\u2019s goal of attracting larger vessels to Nigerian ports.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">On his part, CEO of APM Terminals Nigeria, Frederik Kline thanked the Minister for his commitment to reforms in the maritime sector.
