{"id":117222,"date":"2025-04-10T16:53:19","date_gmt":"2025-04-10T15:53:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=117222"},"modified":"2025-04-10T16:53:19","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T15:53:19","slug":"nerc-fines-eight-discos-n628m-for-overbilling-unmetered-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/nerc-fines-eight-discos-n628m-for-overbilling-unmetered-customers\/","title":{"rendered":"NERC Fines Eight DisCos N628m for Overbilling Unmetered Customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Daniel Adaji<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has taken disciplinary action against eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for failing to comply with billing regulations aimed at protecting unmetered customers from unfair charges.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement on Thursday by the Commission, NERC announced that Abuja, Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, and Yola DisCos have all been sanctioned for breaching the capping limits on estimated billing between July and September 2024.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cPursuant to section 34(1)(d) of the Electricity Act 2023 (\u2018EA 2023\u2019), the Commission has sanctioned eight (8) Electricity Distribution Companies\u2026 for failing to fully comply with the monthly energy caps issued by the Commission,\u201d the statement read.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The infractions relate to a regulation introduced in 2020, which caps estimated bills for unmetered customers to reflect the average consumption of their metered counterparts on the same feeder line.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to NERC, a review of billing records for Q3 2024 revealed that the sanctioned DisCos had exceeded the prescribed limits.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">As a result, the affected DisCos have been fined a combined total of N628,031,583.94, representing \u201c5% of the naira value of the gross overbilling for the period under review.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to the financial penalties, NERC has ordered that \u201ccommensurate credit adjustments\u201d be issued to all overbilled customers no later than May 15, 2025, marking the end of the April 2025 billing cycle.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Commission emphasized that it remains resolute in its oversight responsibilities, stating, \u201cThe Commission reaffirms its commitment to regulatory compliance and consumer protection within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.&#8221;<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Daniel Adaji The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has taken disciplinary action against eight electricity distribution companies (DisCos) for failing to comply with billing regulations aimed at protecting unmetered customers&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":117223,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-117222","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
