{"id":117418,"date":"2025-04-15T16:19:42","date_gmt":"2025-04-15T15:19:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=117418"},"modified":"2025-04-15T16:19:42","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T15:19:42","slug":"bpsr-rallies-mdas-on-foi-compliance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/bpsr-rallies-mdas-on-foi-compliance\/","title":{"rendered":"BPSR Rallies MDAs on FOI Compliance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Daniel Adaji<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Director General of the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), Dasuki Arabi, has called on Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to step up efforts in implementing the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act, describing it as essential to building trust, accountability, and democratic governance.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a statement shared with Pointblank News on Tuesday, Arabi emphasized that \u201cdespite progress made, challenges persist in the full realization of the objectives of the FOI Act.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said the Bureau, in collaboration with the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Public Integrity (CeFTPI) and the African Centre for Media and Information Literacy, remains committed to entrenching openness in the public sector.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis initiative underscores our unwavering commitment to entrenching transparency, accountability, and good governance within the public sector,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Arabi noted that the effective implementation of the FOI Act is crucial for strengthening democratic institutions.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe FOI Act 2011 is a landmark legislation that empowers citizens, promotes openness in governance, and ensures access to public information,\u201d he stated.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">To ensure FOI compliance across government bodies, the Bureau has integrated FOI platforms into its Scorecard assessment of MDAs\u2019 websites.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to Arabi, \u201cThe Bureau, as part of its requirement for Scorecard for ranking MDAs\u2019 websites, included the FOI platform on MDAs\u2019 portal to support government initiatives on the implementation of public policies and boost compliance to standards.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also highlighted ongoing collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Justice, noting that the Bureau has \u201cperiodically held several sensitization workshops on FOIA for officers across MDAs.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a move to track implementation, Arabi revealed that in 2018, BPSR conducted a perception survey to \u201cgauge the level of FOIA compliance across MDAs and assess the administrative bottlenecks mitigating the implementation, upon which policy recommendations were made to the government for adoption.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He stressed that fostering a culture of public interest disclosure remains critical to fighting corruption.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cPublic interest disclosure is a crucial element in the fight against corruption and maladministration.
