{"id":118183,"date":"2025-05-01T20:18:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T19:18:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=118183"},"modified":"2025-05-01T20:18:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T19:18:10","slug":"efcc-probes-nimet-dg-over-alleged-multi-billion-naira-contract-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/efcc-probes-nimet-dg-over-alleged-multi-billion-naira-contract-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"EFCC Probes NiMet DG Over Alleged Multi-billion-Naira Contract Scam"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>By Lizzy Chirkpi<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has commenced investigation into a suspected multi-billion-naira contract fraud allegedly involving the Director-General of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Mr. Charles Anosike.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>According to an EFCC document dated March 28, 2025, obtained by Pointblanknews, the anti-graft agency is actively investigating a case concerning NiMet and has formally requested information from Mr. Anosike&#8217;s office.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In its correspondence, the EFCC demanded comprehensive details regarding all contracts executed by NiMet from 2023 to date.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The agency is also seeking a list of NiMet&#8217;s registered contractors, evidence of adherence to due procurement processes in the award of these contracts, and detailed information on the agency&#8217;s operational bank accounts.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The EFCC stated that any additional information relevant to their investigation would also be required.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The agency&#8217;s request is legally grounded in Section 38 (1) &amp; (2) of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (Establishment) Act, 2004, as indicated in the official correspondence.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As of Wednesday night, a NiMet spokesperson had not responded to requests for comment regarding the ongoing investigation.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Mr. Anosike assumed the position of Director-General of NiMet in December 2023. Prior to this appointment, he served as the Director of Applied Meteorological Services at the agency from 2021.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This investigation comes on the heels of recent industrial action by NiMet workers last month. The workers had protested against what they described as poor working conditions and the non-implementation of agreed financial allowances and outstanding entitlements. Their grievances included unpaid wage awards, peculiar allowances, and arrears from the 2019 minimum wage.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Additionally, the workers accused the NiMet management of prioritizing executive retreats over essential training programs for staff.<\/div>\n<div>The strike was eventually called off following a closed-door meeting between the workers&#8217; representatives and the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, in Abuja last week.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The EFCC&#8217;s investigation into the alleged contract fraud adds another layer of scrutiny to the leadership of NiMet and raises further questions about the agency&#8217;s management and financial practices.
