{"id":118202,"date":"2025-05-01T20:34:23","date_gmt":"2025-05-01T19:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=118202"},"modified":"2025-05-01T20:34:23","modified_gmt":"2025-05-01T19:34:23","slug":"sec-flags-tofro-as-fraudulent-after-pointblank-news-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/sec-flags-tofro-as-fraudulent-after-pointblank-news-report\/","title":{"rendered":"SEC Flags TOFRO as Fraudulent After Pointblank News Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>Daniel Adaji<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has declared\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tofro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/TOFRO.COM&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746205326000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0HOGQnr0Djm4hT1I2IexS6\">TOFRO.COM<\/a>, an unregistered cryptocurrency platform, as a fraudulent operation exhibiting traits of a Ponzi scheme.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This announcement follows an investigative report by Pointblank News, which exposed how the platform, also known as MTS\/TOFRO, locked out Nigerian investors and vanished with their funds.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe Commission hereby informs the public that TOFRO is NOT REGISTERED by the Commission either to solicit investments from the public or operate in any other capacity within the Nigerian capital market,\u201d SEC said in an official statement on Thursday.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Thousands of Nigerians were affected after TOFRO suddenly shut down on April 19, 2025. Victims reported being unable to access their accounts or withdraw their funds.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One source told Pointblank News, \u201cI was promised access again by April 20, but I can\u2019t even log in. All my savings are gone.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>SEC revealed that TOFRO lured investors with the promise of unusually high returns and operated a multi-level referral system typical of Ponzi schemes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The platform failed to honour withdrawal requests and relied on new investors to pay existing ones\u2014signs commonly associated with fraudulent operations.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>SEC Director-General Dr. Emomotimi Agama emphasised the need for vigilance.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cWe welcome innovation, but it must occur within a regulated environment that protects investors and maintains the integrity of our market,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>TOFRO, also operating under the name MTS\/TOFRO, had claimed to be a U.S.-based platform offering digital asset trading services. It presented itself as an innovative global exchange, allegedly managed by a seasoned investment expert, Harris Levy.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Investors were told that the platform had secured $30 million in deposits and was in the process of formal registration with the SEC.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>However, between April 14 and 19, users reported restricted withdrawals, followed by a complete block of access on April 19. TOFRO operated several administrative accounts including \u201cHarris Levy,\u201d \u201cHarris Levy 2,\u201d and \u201cMTS Administrator,\u201d according to Pointblank News. A Nigerian known as \u201cAllThings,\u201d who reportedly helped introduce MTS to Nigeria, has since gone into hiding.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe attention of the Securities and Exchange Commission has been drawn to the activities of an online platform known as\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/tofro.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/TOFRO.COM&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746205326000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0HOGQnr0Djm4hT1I2IexS6\">TOFRO.COM<\/a>\u00a0(Tofro), which holds itself out as a cryptocurrency trading platform,\u201d the SEC stated. \u201cInvestigations have revealed that TOFRO\u2019s operations exhibit the typical indicators of a fraudulent Ponzi scheme.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>SEC warned that individuals who invest in TOFRO do so at their own risk. It urged Nigerians to always verify the registration status of any investment platform through its official website:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sec.gov.ng\/cmos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=http:\/\/www.sec.gov.ng\/cmos&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1746205326000000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3QOScNyI0oTSvf95wXCYpZ\">www.sec.gov.ng\/cmos<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Under the new Investments and Securities Act (ISA) 2025, SEC has broader powers to prosecute digital investment fraud and collaborate with law enforcement agencies. This includes clamping down on platforms like TOFRO that operate without regulatory approval.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>As it stands, TOFRO has joined a growing list of fraudulent schemes, including the notorious MMM, which collapsed in 2016.
