{"id":118285,"date":"2025-05-04T21:00:22","date_gmt":"2025-05-04T20:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=118285"},"modified":"2025-05-04T21:00:22","modified_gmt":"2025-05-04T20:00:22","slug":"obi-condemns-vdms-arrest-assault-on-nans-president","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/obi-condemns-vdms-arrest-assault-on-nans-president\/","title":{"rendered":"Obi Condemns VDM&#8217;s Arrest, Assault on NANS President"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1831196043502702733\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Myke Agunwa<\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1831196043502702733-content\" class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi has condemned the arrest of Martin Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM) as well as the reported attack on the President of National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) Atiku Isah.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">VDM accused Money Deposit Bank, the Guaranty Trust Bank of illegal deductions and hidden charges on customers&#8217; accounts<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">VDM was reportedly arrested last week after visiting the bank with his mother to address \u201cunauthorised withdrawals from her account\u201d.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">A human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju reported that social media activist was arrested by police officers at a Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) branch in Abuja on Friday<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reacting to the development, Obi in series of tweets on his official X handle on Sunday, said that the gestapo like arrest was unsettling and akin to abduction.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He expressed concern over the increasing tension in the country, exacerbated by what he described as disregard for the rule of law and human rights.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said the arrest, while possibly within the legal rights of security agencies, was executed in a manner that left many Nigerians feeling unsafe.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe display of force, lacking in transparency and civility, closely resembled an abduction.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis disturbing method not only creates fear but also risks being mimicked by criminal elements.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIf Nigerians begin to struggle to distinguish between legitimate arrests and unlawful abductions, we will lose a vital layer of national security and accountability\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obi suggested that a more civil and transparent approach could have been deployed.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWas it impossible to invite Mr. Otse in a civil, transparent, and legal manner?
