{"id":118611,"date":"2025-05-10T10:11:58","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T09:11:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=118611"},"modified":"2025-05-10T10:11:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-10T09:11:58","slug":"exclusive-no-law-supports-arrest-of-homeless-rights-group-tells-lagos-govt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/exclusive-no-law-supports-arrest-of-homeless-rights-group-tells-lagos-govt\/","title":{"rendered":"Exclusive: No Law Supports Arrest of Homeless, Rights Group Tells Lagos Govt"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1831714443538787893\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify; padding-left: 40px;\">By Daniel Adaji<\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1831714443538787893-content\" class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights (ISSJHR), has condemned the arrest of 74 homeless individuals by the Lagos State Government, warning that the action violates constitutional rights and reflects a failure in governance.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chancellor of ISSJHR, Dr. Jackson Omenazu, in an exclusive interview with Pointblanknews.com on Friday, described the move as \u201ca sign of a government that has lost its political bearing.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe arrest of 74 homeless persons in that manner by the Lagos State Government is a sign of a government that is insensitive to the plight of the citizens,\u201d Omenazu said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is the duty of government to provide housing for the citizens\u2014cheap and affordable housing at that,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recall that earlier in the week, the Lagos State Environmental Taskforce conducted a midnight raid around key locations including Falomo Bridge, Oniru Beach, and Lekki Phases 1 and 2, arresting 72 men and two women. Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, confirmed the operation, saying the suspects would be charged to court.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">But critics argue that such a move criminalizes poverty and homelessness\u2014conditions largely driven by the country\u2019s dire economic and housing crises.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFor a human being to remain homeless and be wandering on the street and sleeping on the street shows that such a citizen is dejected,\u201d said Omenazu. \u201cAnd instead of providing succour, the government arrests them and charges them to court.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He questioned the legal basis for the arrests. \u201cUnder what laws are they being charged to court? There\u2019s no extant law in this country that demands that a homeless person should be prosecuted. There\u2019s no Act of Parliament that provides for that.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Omenazu called the arrests a \u201cgross violation of human rights\u201d and demanded the immediate release of those detained.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe at the International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights are calling for the immediate release and provision of affordable housing to the dejected Nigerians.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Public reaction has been swift and largely critical. Social media users expressed outrage over the state government\u2019s approach, with many questioning the morality of penalizing homelessness in a country grappling with economic hardship and a housing deficit estimated at over 28 million units.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is so pathetic, arresting people for being homeless instead of helping?\u201d wrote Facebook user Ikechukwu Oge. Another user, Christian Chrisgold, said, \u201cYou want to charge a person to court for being homeless? What a nonsense government.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Though a few voices supported the action on security grounds, the overwhelming sentiment was one of disappointment and concern.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is unacceptable in a democracy. Arresting them under such situations means that you are reminding them that there is no government to take care of them,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The development highlights broader systemic failures in Nigeria. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, over 63 per cent of Nigerians are multidimensionally poor\u2014lacking access to healthcare, education, and adequate housing. With inflation and unemployment on the rise, the struggle to survive has become increasingly acute for millions.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Human rights advocates argue that until structural problems such as poverty, housing shortages, and joblessness are addressed, punitive actions against vulnerable populations will only deepen social inequality.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe have had several cases of this one-term violation of rights by government against citizens,\u201d said Omenazu.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cNo citizen should be subjected to such inhumanity.
