{"id":119902,"date":"2025-06-20T19:05:33","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T18:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=119902"},"modified":"2025-06-20T19:05:33","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T18:05:33","slug":"2027-tinubu-to-choose-running-mate-after-apc-convention-presidency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/2027-tinubu-to-choose-running-mate-after-apc-convention-presidency\/","title":{"rendered":"2027: Tinubu to Choose Running Mate After APC Convention-Presidency"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Oscar Okhifo<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Presidency has declared that President Bola Tinubu will only name his running mate for the 2027 presidential election after the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) holds its national convention.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">This is just as the President&#8221;s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, described ongoing speculations about the possibility of the\u00a0 President dropping Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the next election as very premature and baseless.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Onanuga stated that until the APC holds its convention in 2026 and formally nominates Tinubu as its Presidential flag bearer, discussions about who his running mate would be remain purely in the realm of\u00a0 speculation.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">His words: \u201cThe issue of a running mate only arises after a candidate has emerged,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The clarification comes on the heels of reports suggesting that Vice President Shettima\u2019s name was deliberately omitted during recent political gatherings endorsing Tinubu for re-election.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0At a recent APC North-East stakeholders&#8217; meeting in Gombe, tensions flared when Shettima\u2019s name was not mentioned during the\u00a0 endorsement, sparking concerns over his political future.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, senior APC officials have since dismissed the controversy. North-East APC Vice Chairman, Salihu Mustapha, emphasized that only the presidential candidate has the constitutional right to choose a running mate. He\u00a0 stressed that any decision on Shettima\u2019s position will only be made after the party\u2019s convention which is still far away.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Similarly, the North-Central APC Forum cautioned against undue pressure or pre-emptive discussions, warning that any attempt to \u201cforcefully remove\u201d Shettima could destabilize party unity.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0The Forum maintained that due process must be followed, allowing the presidential candidate to exercise his prerogative in picking a vice-presidential candidate.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s been a major political discuss and commentators have , warned that any premature decision or imposition could trigger internal divisions within the APC. They urged party leaders to maintain unity and respect the constitutional process.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the APC convention still months away, the Presidency insists that Tinubu remains fully focused on governance and the party\u2019s broader political strategy, while Vice President Shettima continues to perform his duties as second-in-command.
