{"id":120560,"date":"2025-07-12T14:39:45","date_gmt":"2025-07-12T13:39:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=120560"},"modified":"2025-07-12T14:39:45","modified_gmt":"2025-07-12T13:39:45","slug":"digital-asset-fraud-threatens-market-integrity-says-dg-sec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/digital-asset-fraud-threatens-market-integrity-says-dg-sec\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Asset Fraud Threatens Market Integrity, Says DG, SEC"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\u200eDaniel Adaji<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eThe Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Dr. Emomotimi Agama, has stated that digital asset fraud threatens market integrity and investor confidence.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eSpeaking recently in Abuja at an event to mark the African Union Anti-Corruption Day, themed \u201cUnderstanding Virtual Assets and Investment Fraud\u201d, Agama said the rise of sophisticated scams exploiting virtual assets is undermining trust in financial systems and stalling Africa\u2019s development.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eIn a statement on Thursday Agama said, \u201cToday, as digital innovation transforms financial systems, we face new challenges, particularly the rise of virtual asset fraud and sophisticated investment scams exploiting unsuspecting investors.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e&#8221;These threats undermine market integrity, erode trust, and divert resources meant for sustainable development,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eHe said corruption remains a significant barrier to the continent\u2019s economic growth, social progress, and investor confidence, stressing the need for collective action.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eAgama outlined the SEC\u2019s ongoing efforts to address these risks, noting that the Commission is \u201cstrengthening investor education on recognising and avoiding fraudulent schemes; enhancing regulatory frameworks to keep pace with evolving risks in virtual assets and digital investments; and fostering cross-border collaboration to combat corruption and illicit financial flows.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eHe stated that the new Investment and Securities Act (ISA) 2025 provides a legal foundation for regulating cryptocurrencies, digital tokens, and other blockchain-based assets. The law designates the SEC as the principal regulator for virtual assets considered securities or investment products.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eAccording to him, \u201call Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) exchanges, custodians, brokers, must obtain SEC approval and meet capital, governance, and cybersecurity standards.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eAgama also stressed the importance of risk disclosures, warning that all platforms must inform investors about volatility, fraud, and regulatory dangers. He added that there are strict penalties for market manipulation, insider trading, and Ponzi schemes.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cThe ISA 2025 provides a comprehensive legal framework for virtual asset regulation, balancing innovation, investor protection, and financial stability.
