{"id":121110,"date":"2025-07-30T03:15:52","date_gmt":"2025-07-30T02:15:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=121110"},"modified":"2025-07-30T03:15:52","modified_gmt":"2025-07-30T02:15:52","slug":"integrity-of-lg-elections-paramount-inec-chairman-reminds-siecs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/integrity-of-lg-elections-paramount-inec-chairman-reminds-siecs\/","title":{"rendered":"Integrity of LG elections paramount, INEC Chairman reminds\u00a0 SIECS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1839035479291294331\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1839035479291294331-header\" class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Myke Agunwa, Abuja<\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1839035479291294331-content\" class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has reaffirmed the Commission\u2019s commitment to strengthening the integrity of local government elections conducted by the State Independent Electoral Commissions, (SIECs).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The INEC boss made the pledge on Tuesday at the commission&#8217;s headquarters in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the newly inaugurated executives of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON).<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">FOSIECON was led by its national chairman and chairman of the Kogi State Independent Electoral Commission, Hon. Mamman Nda Eri.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In his address, Yakubu noted that State Electoral Commissions are creations of the Constitution, adding that both bodies have a joint responsibility to ensure credible electoral processes.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He stressed the importance of strict adherence to the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, particularly sections 98\u2013113 and Section 151, which guide the conduct of local government elections.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Expressed concern over the quality and credibility of local government elections in many states Yakubu said,<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe problem is not whether elections are held, but how they are conducted. We must work to improve transparency and integrity at the local level to match the standard INEC has maintained in the FCT, where elections are held regularly and no caretaker committees have ever been appointed,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Earlier in his address, FOSIECON Chairman, Mamman Eri outlined key areas in which the body seeks INEC\u2019s support, including technical assistance, capacity building and knowledge sharing.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCredible local government elections are fundamental to democratic development. With INEC\u2019s support, SIECs can deliver processes that reflect both national expectations and international standards.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur commitment is grounded in the belief that credible local government elections are fundamental to democratic development, and that SIECs, with proper support and alignment, can deliver electoral processes that meet national and international standards.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are here to respectfully seek your continued support and collaboration to support the deployment of appropriate technology and systems that can improve the conduct of local government elections, to enhance the professionalism and operational efficiency of SIEC officials through joint training programmes, workshops and peer learning exchanges, to foster a platform for the exchange of best practices, research and innovations in electoral management that can benefit both INEC and SIECs, \u201d he stated.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Members of the FOSIECON delegation included Elder Aniedi A.
