{"id":121294,"date":"2025-08-07T19:35:37","date_gmt":"2025-08-07T18:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=121294"},"modified":"2025-08-07T19:35:37","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T18:35:37","slug":"how-failure-to-enforce-agrochemical-ban-endangers-nigerian-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/how-failure-to-enforce-agrochemical-ban-endangers-nigerian-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"How Failure to Enforce Agrochemical Ban Endangers Nigerian Lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>By \u200eDaniel Adaji<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eRegulatory lapses in enforcing Nigeria\u2019s ban on toxic agrochemicals are endangering lives and putting the country\u2019s food exports at risk, stakeholders have warned.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eIn 2020 alone, no fewer than 270 villagers reportedly died due to exposure to hazardous pesticides, while Nigeria loses about $362.5m annually from the European Union&#8217;s ban on its beans exports over pesticide residues.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eMore than 76 per cent of Nigeria\u2019s agricultural exports are routinely rejected by the EU for safety concerns related to banned chemicals still permitted locally.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eExperts and stakeholders raised the alarm on Thursday at a media briefing organised by the Alliance for Action on Pesticides in Nigeria (AAPN), themed \u201cStop the spread of toxic pesticides in Nigeria\u2014protect our health, food and environment.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eLegal Lead at AAPN, Oreoluwa Adelakun, decried the widespread use of harmful agrochemicals distributed under various government and legislative programmes, despite safer alternatives being available.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cAcross Nigeria, various government programmes\u2014including those facilitated by legislators, ministries, and development actors\u2014routinely provide farmers and communities with agricultural inputs such as chemical fertilizers and pesticides,\u201d Adelakun said.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eWhile acknowledging the importance of pesticides, she noted that their use comes with \u201cdeeper and bigger challenges across public health, trade, and environmental domains.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eShe warned that over 65 per cent of active ingredients in pesticides used in Nigeria are classified as highly hazardous and have been banned or tightly regulated in other countries due to serious health and environmental risks.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eCo-founder of AAPN and food safety expert, Prof. Simon Irtwange, expressed concern over the continued use of more than 400 pesticide formulations in Nigeria, over half of which are deemed highly hazardous and banned in the EU, United States, and parts of Asia.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cThese include chemicals used widely in Nigeria\u2019s food production systems and distributed through constituency projects, farmer groups and associations, and philanthropic donations,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eHe cited data showing that Nigeria uses approximately 23,400 metric tons of pesticides annually, with farmers and agro-companies spending around $400 million each year on these chemicals. Surveys reveal that up to 75% of women farmers report health issues linked to pesticide use, and over 80% of pesticides used by smallholder farmers are hazardous.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cFrequent health issues include respiratory problems, skin rashes, nausea, vomiting, eye irritation, and in chronic cases, endocrine disruption, immune malfunction, neurotoxicity, reproductive disorders, and various cancers,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eIrtwange blamed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) for what he described as a failure to enforce pesticide regulations.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cWe call attention to the ongoing failures of NAFDAC and FCCPC,\u201d he said. \u201cNo continuous visible enforcement of bans or restrictions on known toxic pesticides persist\u2014just one-off arrests. There are no robust public warning systems, no tracking or sanctions for violators.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eHe further condemned the continued sale of these hazardous products online and offline, urging regulators to act.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cWe strongly condemn both physical and online sellers who continue to profit from these hazardous products in defiance of regulations,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eAdelakun called on legislators and philanthropists to ensure transparency and legality in distributing farm inputs.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cThey should only distribute pesticides that are legally permitted, safe for humans and the environment, and meet international or national quality standards,\u201d she said. \u201cLegislators and philanthropists must move from unchecked benevolence to responsible, transparent, and answerable support.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eAlso speaking at the event, Environmental Toxicologist and Policy Advocate at the Sustainable Research and Action for Environmental Development (SRADeV), Mr. Victor Fabunmi, urged the government to immediately review and enforce national pesticide regulations.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cThere\u2019s an urgent need to review NAFDAC registration and regulations of pesticides,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cThere must be commitment from manufacturers to take back obsolete pesticides in collaboration with NESREA,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eHe recommended the introduction of a mandatory Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) for pesticide value chain management as a prerequisite for importation.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eRepresenting farmers at the event, President of the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Dr. Farouk Mudi, stressed the urgent need to protect Nigerian farmers and consumers from the harmful effects of toxic agrochemicals.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cAs the President of AFAN, I speak not just for our farmers, but for every Nigerian who eats food, drinks water, and hopes for a healthier future,\u201d Mudi said. \u201cOur farmers are the backbone of this nation, yet they are exposed to dangerous and harmful pesticides.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eHe decried the involvement of government-backed projects in distributing these toxic substances and urged farmers to be vigilant.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cDon\u2019t just accept everything handed to you without knowing its impact on your health, your family, and your future,\u201d he noted.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cWe call on NAFDAC, the Consumer Protection Council, the National Assembly, and the Executive Arm of Government to act swiftly,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200eMudi also announced AFAN\u2019s plan to convene a national General Assembly of Farmers and sign an MoU with partners to safeguard the country\u2019s agricultural systems.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cNigerians deserve safe food, responsible governance, and a toxic-free agricultural system,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div>\u200e\u201cTogether, we must act &#8211; to protect our food, our health, and our future.\u201d<\/div>\n<div>\u200e<\/div>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By \u200eDaniel Adaji \u200e \u200eRegulatory lapses in enforcing Nigeria\u2019s ban on toxic agrochemicals are endangering lives and putting the country\u2019s food exports at risk, stakeholders have warned. \u200e \u200eIn 2020&hellip;<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><!-- AddThis Related Posts generic via filter on wp_trim_excerpt --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":121295,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_lmt_disableupdate":"","_lmt_disable":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-121294","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.8 -
