{"id":122642,"date":"2025-09-30T08:51:20","date_gmt":"2025-09-30T07:51:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=122642"},"modified":"2025-09-30T08:51:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T07:51:20","slug":"dangote-refinery-nlc-orders-nationwide-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/dangote-refinery-nlc-orders-nationwide-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"Dangote Refinery: NLC orders nationwide strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Myke Agunwa<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has commenced mobilization of affiliate unions for a nationwide strike against what it described as the Dangote Group\u2019s \u201cdeliberate anti-worker crusade\u201d and disregard for Nigeria\u2019s labour laws.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recall that in September 2025, Dangote Petroleum Refinery reportedly dismissed over 800 Nigerian workers, sparking controversy. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) alleged the sackings targeted employees who joined the union to secure better working conditions, thus, violating Nigeria\u2019s labor laws and constitutional rights to association.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dangote Refinery cited \u201creorganization\u201d and \u201csabotage\u201d as reasons for the dismissals, denying anti-union motives. The Trade Union Congress (TUC) and civil society groups condemned the action, urging the reinstatement of the workers and the initiation of dialogue. PENGASSAN threatened legal and industrial action, pushing that the company should be cut off from gas supplies.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In an internal memo signed by NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, on September 29, 2025, NLC said the time for \u201cpleading and fruitless dialogue\u201d with the conglomerate was over and that the moment had come for \u201cdecisive, collective action.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the memo, \u201cThe ongoing disputes with PENGASSAN and NUPENG are only symptoms of a deeper problem: a systemic anti-labour policy of union-busting, worker exploitation, and disregard for the rule of law that defines the Group\u2019s industrial relations practices.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFor too long, the Dangote Group has operated like a state within a state, flouting Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution, violating ILO Conventions 87 and 98, and treating our labour laws with contempt. Its facilities have become plantations of exploitation where workers\u2019 dignity is deliberately crushed in pursuit of profit for a few.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe time for pleading and fruitless dialogue is over. The moment for decisive, collective action is now. All affiliate unions are hereby placed on immediate and full alert, begin vigorous and comprehensive unionisation of all workers within Dangote facilities under your jurisdiction. This is a strategic priority.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cCommence preparations to mobilise members and resources for full-scale, decisive engagement against the Dangote Group\u2019s anti-labour stance.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe Congress also issued clear demands to the Dangote Group: \u201cUnconditional respect for workers\u2019 right to freely join unions of their choice, an end to intimidation, victimisation, and union-busting activities, and full compliance with Nigeria\u2019s labour laws and institutions.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTo enforce the directive, each affiliate union has been instructed to immediately set up an Action Mobilisation Committee and liaise with the NLC National Secretariat within 72 hours to coordinate strategy, logistics, and communication. Unity of purpose and action is non-negotiable.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe NLC accused the Dangote Group of operating with impunity, alleging that regulatory authorities had failed to rein in its excesses. The impunity of the Dangote Group must be met with the collective resistance of organised labour. No amount of propaganda or paid agents will stop us from defending workers\u2019 rights, especially in the face of regulatory capture, where the state appears to have abdicated its duty to hold this conglomerate accountable.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe blood and sweat of Nigerian workers built the Dangote empire; we will not allow it to become a monument to their oppression. Together we stand!
