{"id":122785,"date":"2025-10-06T19:19:16","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T18:19:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=122785"},"modified":"2025-10-06T19:19:16","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T18:19:16","slug":"nrc-boss-blames-abuja-kaduna-train-accident-on-human-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/nrc-boss-blames-abuja-kaduna-train-accident-on-human-error\/","title":{"rendered":"NRC Boss Blames Abuja-Kaduna Train Accident on \u2018Human Error\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>By Oscar Okhifo<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Dr. Kayode Opeifa, has attributed the August 26 derailment of an Abuja\u2013Kaduna passenger train to human error, citing excessive speed and improper handling of safety procedures as major causes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Speaking during an interview on Channels Television\u2019s &#8216;Morning Brief&#8217; on Monday, Opeifa said preliminary investigations revealed that the train operator exceeded the prescribed speed limit while passing through a manually operated switch point, resulting in what he described as \u201cbursting the point.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe derailment was largely due to human error,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0\u201cThe train went through a switch point at a speed above the prescribed limit, which resulted in the incident. There was also an issue with how the emergency brakes were applied.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He, however, declined to disclose the exact speed limit for the section of the track where the incident occurred, saying: \u201cI wouldn\u2019t want to go into that.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The NRC boss noted that the corporation\u2019s internal investigation identified operational lapses but stressed that the final report would come from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the Federal Ministry of Transportation\u2019s investigative panel.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Opeifa also revealed that public pressure mounted on the agency to resume operations immediately after the crash. \u201cPeople started calling the NRC the next day, asking us to bring back the service,\u201d he said. \u201cBut we couldn\u2019t rush it. Passenger safety comes first.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>According to him, six passengers sustained minor injuries and have since been treated. However, the corporation is still working to determine the exact number of passengers on board at the time of the derailment.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He added that the NRC had commenced refunding tickets to affected passengers and had reinforced safety protocols ahead of resuming services on the corridor.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u201cThe Abuja\u2013Kaduna route is safe. We have reviewed our operating procedures, retrained our staff, and inspected every section of the track,\u201d he assured, emphasizing that the corporation is working closely with the NSIB to uncover both the immediate and underlying causes of the accident.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Meanwhile, a passenger who was on board during the incident described the scene as \u201cchaotic,\u201d recalling how people scrambled for safety amid confusion and fear.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Abuja\u2013Kaduna train service, which was suspended for several weeks following the incident, resumed operations on October 1.
