{"id":123124,"date":"2025-10-22T02:09:21","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T01:09:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=123124"},"modified":"2025-10-22T02:09:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T01:09:21","slug":"presidency-slams-nnamdi-kanus-lawyer-for-joining-freennamdikanu-protest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/presidency-slams-nnamdi-kanus-lawyer-for-joining-freennamdikanu-protest\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidency slams Nnamdi Kanu\u2019s lawyer for joining #FreeNnamdiKanu protest"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Oscar Okhifo<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Presidency has taken a swipe at one of Nnamdi Kanu\u2019s lawyers, Aloy Ejimakor, over his participation in a protest demanding the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), describing the action as unbecoming of a legal practitioner handling a case still before the court.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The protest, tagged #FreeNnamdiKanuNow, was held in Abuja on Monday and led by activist politician Omoyele Sowore and other pro-Biafra sympathisers.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Demonstrators demanded Kanu\u2019s immediate release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), where he has been held since his re-arrest in 2021.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Reacting to the protest, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, faulted Ejimakor\u2019s involvement, describing it as unprofessional and a breach of legal ethics.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Onanuga wrote:<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI spotted Aloy Ejimakor among the small group of protesters mobilised by Omoyele Sowore. I wonder what Mr Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Onanuga said it was inappropriate for a lawyer whose client\u2019s case is still pending in court to participate in a public demonstration over the same matter, arguing that such conduct undermines the judicial process.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cInstead of preparing a strong defence for his client in court, he joined a street protest. This clearly violates the principle of sub judice and brings the legal profession into disrepute,\u201d he stated.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The presidential aide urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) to investigate the lawyer\u2019s conduct and apply appropriate sanctions if found guilty of professional misconduct.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe NBA should look into this and decide whether it is proper for a practising lawyer to join in protests over a case that is before a competent court,\u201d Onanuga added.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">As of the time of filing this report, Ejimakor had not issued an official response to the Presidency\u2019s remarks. However, sources close to him indicated that he joined the protest in solidarity with his client and as part of a wider demand for justice and respect for court orders.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing terrorism-related charges, has remained in DSS custody despite several court rulings ordering his release.
