{"id":123399,"date":"2025-10-29T21:12:44","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T20:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=123399"},"modified":"2025-10-29T21:12:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T20:12:44","slug":"fg-moves-to-close-2-2m-fish-deficit-boost-aquaculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/fg-moves-to-close-2-2m-fish-deficit-boost-aquaculture\/","title":{"rendered":"\u200eFG Moves to Close 2.2m Fish Deficit, Boost Aquaculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1847334494071063217\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1847334494071063217-header\" class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Daniel Adaji<\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1847334494071063217-content\" class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200e<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200eThe Federal Government is taking steps to close its widening fish supply gap and boost aquaculture production.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200e<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200eThis was revealed at the opening of a two-day Roundtable Discussion on Accelerating National Fish Production held in Lagos on Wednesday, where the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy entered into a partnership with the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) to develop a national roadmap for fish production.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200e<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200eThe Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Adegboyega Oyetola, said the collaboration marks a critical move toward implementing President Bola Tinubu\u2019s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises food security, job creation, and economic diversification.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200e<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200e\u201cCurrent output meets only about 38.9 per cent of the 3.6 million metric tonnes of fish required annually. This leaves a deficit of over 2.2 million metric tonnes, forcing Nigeria to rely heavily on imports. This trend is unsustainable economically, nutritionally, and environmentally,\u201d Oyetola said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200e<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u200eAccording to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Nigeria is one of Africa\u2019s largest consumers of fish, with demand projected to rise beyond 4 million metric tonnes annually by 2030 due to population growth and changing dietary preferences.
