{"id":123482,"date":"2025-11-01T14:34:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-01T13:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=123482"},"modified":"2025-11-01T14:34:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-01T13:34:09","slug":"resident-doctors-begin-indefinite-strike-accuse-fg-of-failing-to-honour-agreements","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/resident-doctors-begin-indefinite-strike-accuse-fg-of-failing-to-honour-agreements\/","title":{"rendered":"Resident Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike, Accuse FG of Failing to Honour Agreements"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"m#msg-f:1847585241258636724\" class=\"mail-message expanded\">\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1847585241258636724-header\" class=\"mail-message-header spacer\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Lizzy Chirkpi<\/div>\n<div id=\"m#msg-f:1847585241258636724-content\" class=\"mail-message-content collapsible zoom-normal mail-show-images \">\n<div class=\"clear\">\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike following the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">NARD President, Dr. Mohammad Suleiman, announced the development in a statement released on the association\u2019s official X account on Saturday, lamenting that the government\u2019s repeated failure to fulfil its promises had left doctors with no other choice.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to him, the strike was a painful but necessary step after several rounds of dialogue, appeals, and ultimatums failed to yield concrete action.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe wish to address you at this critical time as we embark on a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike, a decision that did not come lightly, nor was it ever our desire,\u201d Suleiman said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are fully aware of the pains and inconveniences that accompany any disruption in healthcare services, and we deeply regret the situation.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He emphasized that the association\u2019s demands were not politically driven but rooted in the survival of Nigeria\u2019s health system and the welfare of both medical professionals and patients.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur demands are not selfish, neither are they politically motivated. They are genuine, germane, and patriotic centered on the survival of the Nigerian health system and the well-being of every citizen who depends on it,\u201d Suleiman stated.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He decried the poor working conditions of doctors, describing them as overworked, underpaid, and mentally drained a situation that, he warned, threatens the quality of care delivered to patients.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cA resident doctor who is overworked, underpaid, and mentally exhausted cannot offer optimal care to the patient who needs them most,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The association\u2019s key demands include fair remuneration, payment of arrears, improved working conditions, adequate staffing, and the provision of essential medical infrastructure.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cA nation\u2019s health system can only be as strong as the hands that sustain it. If the doctors are broken, under-motivated, or forced to seek survival abroad, the patients suffer most,\u201d he added.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is why we have taken this painful stand to secure the future of Nigerian healthcare for every man, woman, and child who deserves quality care here at home.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Suleiman called on Nigerians to support the doctors\u2019 cause, urging civil society groups, labour unions, and religious and traditional leaders to pressure the government into meeting their demands.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThis is not a fight between resident doctors and the government; it is a struggle for a functional, just, and humane healthcare system,\u201d he said.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cTogether, we can rebuild a system that values both the carer and the cared-for.
