The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Alhaji Shehu Gabam, has strongly criticized former United States President Donald Trump over his recent comments about Nigeria, describing them as misleading, unfounded, and a direct affront to the nation\u2019s sovereignty and international reputation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Trump had reportedly alleged that Nigeria was engaged in \u201cgenocide against Christians,\u201d a claim that influenced the U.S. government\u2019s decision to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern for alleged violations of religious freedom.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In a statement released in Abuja on Friday, Gabam dismissed Trump\u2019s claims as grossly inaccurate and damaging to Nigeria\u2019s image, noting that insecurity in the country has affected both Christians and Muslims alike.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
According to him, \u201cNigerians from both major faiths have been victims of insecurity. It is unfair and misleading to present Nigeria\u2019s challenges as being rooted in religious persecution.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He explained that the North-East and North-West regions, which have suffered the highest levels of violence, are predominantly Muslim communities. This, he said, completely contradicts Trump\u2019s assertion and highlights the need for Nigerians to promote unity and shared humanity rather than embrace divisive narratives.<\/div>\n

Gabam urged the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to take prompt and strategic diplomatic action to counter what he described as \u201cfalse and dangerous narratives,\u201d by appointing capable and patriotic ambassadors who can effectively represent Nigeria\u2019s interests on the global stage.<\/div>\n

\u201cThis situation requires a deliberate and informed diplomatic response,\u201d Gabam stated. \u201cNigeria must defend itself with facts, statistics, and credible engagement to correct these distortions.\u201d<\/div>\n

While admitting that Nigeria faces serious security and governance challenges, the SDP leader maintained that addressing such issues demands strong domestic reforms, institutional strengthening, and accountability, not foreign interference or pressure.<\/div>\n

\u201cNigeria needs genuine partnership, not intimidation,\u201d he emphasized. \u201cOur leaders must remain focused on protecting citizens\u2019 lives, rebuilding trust, and safeguarding national pride.\u201d<\/div>\n

Recalling previous instances of Trump\u2019s unfriendly remarks about Nigeria \u2014 including labeling the country \u201cfantastically corrupt\u201d and imposing visa restrictions on Nigerians, Gabam said these actions should awaken Nigerian leaders to the need for renewed diplomacy and better governance.<\/div>\n

He said, \u201cIt is time our leaders restored global confidence in Nigeria by addressing corruption, insecurity, and poverty at home.\u201d<\/div>\n

Gabam added that the failures of successive administrations had worsened the nation\u2019s woes, urging the Tinubu government to draw lessons from the past and act decisively to restore peace and stability.<\/div>\n

\u201cOur position as an opposition party is constructive,\u201d he clarified. \u201cWe are calling for tangible results and responsible leadership that can steer Nigeria toward progress.\u201d<\/div>\n

He stressed the importance of professionalism and accountability in Nigeria\u2019s security architecture, calling for a coordinated, holistic strategy to tackle terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, which have plagued the nation for over a decade.<\/div>\n

\u201cSecurity agencies must operate transparently and respect human rights,\u201d he advised. \u201cBuilding citizens\u2019 confidence is crucial for the success of any security strategy.\u201d<\/div>\n

Gabam further observed that the global perception of Nigeria remains vital for the country\u2019s economic and diplomatic relations, but said defending the nation\u2019s image should go hand in hand with improving citizens\u2019 living conditions.<\/div>\n

He said, \u201cNigeria\u2019s leadership must find a balance between managing the country\u2019s global reputation and addressing the real issues affecting its people.\u201d<\/div>\n

The SDP chairman concluded that Nigeria\u2019s unity, peace, and sovereignty depend largely on the integrity and competence of its leaders. He urged all stakeholders to prioritize national interest, foster inclusiveness, and strengthen institutions that uphold justice and security.<\/div>\n

\u201cNigeria needs constructive cooperation, not threats,\u201d Gabam reiterated. \u201cThrough credible leadership, accountability, and a collective sense of purpose, we can secure a stronger, more united, and prosperous nation.\u201d<\/div>\n
