Nigerian writer, Chimamanda Adichie has publicly condemned Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue following his recent remarks dismissing claims of genocide in parts of the state, sparking renewed debate over the incessant violence and displacement of the people in affected communities.<\/p>\n
Ms Adichie, who identified herself as a committed Catholic, expressed profound disappointment over the governor\u2019s comments, describing them as painful and unexpected from someone who also holds the position of a Catholic priest.<\/p>\n
In a lengthy statement on her official Facebook account she said the governor\u2019s remarks were deeply disappointing and unbecoming of a priest, adding that the public denial of genocide allegations amounted to an affront to people suffering from recurring attacks in the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am utterly confused and disappointed that a Catholic priest and the governor of Benue State would stand before cameras and microphones to say there is no genocide happening in his state,\u201d the citizen wrote.<\/p>\n
The critic went on to say that, on a personal level, the governor\u2019s spiritual standing had been diminished by the statement, noting: \u201cFrom today onward, I will address him simply as Mr. Hyacinth Alia. He has ceased to be a priest in my personal understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n
Describing the comments as a \u201cdisgrace to the priesthood and to Christendom,\u201d the writer accused the governor of downplaying the suffering of communities affected by ongoing violence. \u201cI wept not because of the situation itself, but because such words could come from someone who once stood at the altar,\u201d the statement continued.<\/p>\n
She further warned that those who, in their words, \u201cspread lies to cover up the violence in the country\u201d would face accountability in due time.<\/p>\n
Governor Alia has in recent months received both criticism and support over his handling of security issues in the state. While some political allies view his comments as an attempt to ease tensions and prevent further panic, critics insist they downplay the reality of killings and displacement in several rural communities.<\/p>\n
As at the time of going to press, the governor had not issued any further clarification or response to the growing backlash.<\/p>\n
