The Southeast Caucus of the House of Representatives has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider a political and humanitarian intervention in the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu following his recent conviction. The lawmakers warned that Kanu\u2019s continued detention could escalate tensions and undermine peace and stability in the Southeast region.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The appeal came during a Caucus meeting on Monday, 24th November 2025, in Abuja. While reaffirming their respect for the independence of Nigeria\u2019s judiciary, the lawmakers expressed concern about the broader social, political, and security implications of Kanu\u2019s imprisonment.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has remained a polarizing figure in Nigerian politics for over a decade. His activism for the self-determination of the Southeast region has led to repeated arrests, court trials, and widespread unrest. According to observers, calls for clemency are not uncommon in politically sensitive cases, particularly when prolonged detention risks escalating civil tensions.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Speaking on behalf of the Caucus, Hon. Iduma Igariwey, who read a statement endorsed by 42 members, said, \u201cWe respect the judiciary and the rule of law. Nonetheless, the prolonged detention of Mazi Kanu has heightened tensions across the Southeast. It is our responsibility to advocate for the peace, welfare, and stability of our people.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Caucus emphasized that Kanu\u2019s imprisonment has aggravated unrest, insecurity, and agitation in the region. Hon. Igariwey explained further, \u201cA timely presidential intervention could help defuse tensions, prevent civil disturbances, and enable businesses and social activities to resume. Families, communities, and enterprises have suffered significant disruptions due to the current situation.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
They also highlighted the humanitarian dimension of the issue, citing emotional distress, disruptions to daily routines, schooling, and commerce. As Hon. Igariwey stated,<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
“This matter extends beyond politics; it is fundamentally a humanitarian issue. We believe that a measured political resolution can alleviate suffering and restore dignity to affected communities.\u201d<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Citing Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution, the lawmakers urged President Tinubu to exercise his constitutional powers to grant a pardon or reprieve. According to the Caucus, \u201cThe Constitution recognizes that legal processes alone cannot always resolve complex matters that threaten national cohesion. A presidential pardon in this context would demonstrate fairness, foster dialogue, and reinforce the principles of inclusiveness and unity in our nation.\u201d<\/div>\n

The Caucus also suggested that Kanu\u2019s release could open avenues for constructive engagement between the Federal Government, elected representatives, and community stakeholders. Hon. Igariwey noted, \u201cWe hope that such an intervention will provide a platform for meaningful dialogue, strengthen mutual trust, and contribute to lasting peace and unity in the Southeast.\u201d<\/div>\n

In conclusion, the Southeast lawmakers appealed to citizens in the region to remain calm, law-abiding, and supportive of efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution. \u201cWe call on all residents to maintain peace and cooperate with security agencies.
