{"id":124442,"date":"2025-12-15T21:47:56","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T20:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=124442"},"modified":"2025-12-15T21:47:56","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T20:47:56","slug":"reps-cttee-summons-ibedc-bedc-phedc-over-%e2%82%a6100bn-debt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/reps-cttee-summons-ibedc-bedc-phedc-over-%e2%82%a6100bn-debt\/","title":{"rendered":"Reps C&#8217;ttee Summons IBEDC, BEDC, PHEDC Over \u20a6100bn Debt"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Tracy Moses<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The House of Representatives Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has summoned the management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), and Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) over unpaid liabilities estimated at over \u20a6100 billion owed to the Federation Account.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The committee issued a 72-hour deadline to the three electricity distribution companies during a public hearing held on Monday, warning that failure to honour the summons would attract sanctions for contempt of the National Assembly.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Chairman of the committee, Representative Bamidele Salam, gave the directive after observing that the affected Discos had repeatedly ignored earlier invitations extended to them by the committee.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The decision followed the adoption of an interim report submitted by the chairman of the committee\u2019s subcommittee, Hon. Mark Chidi Obetta.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">It will be recalled that on August 20, 2025, the PAC had summoned 11 electricity distribution companies over a combined debt of about \u20a62.6 trillion owed to the Federation Account.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite this, the management of IBEDC, BEDC, and PHEDC have persistently failed to appear before the committee to explain their outstanding obligations, as contained in the Auditor-General\u2019s reports for the 2021 and 2022 fiscal years.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The committee condemned the continued absence of the three Discos, describing their conduct as a willful disregard for legislative authority, and cautioned that severe penalties would be imposed if they fail to appear before the committee on Thursday, December 18, 2025.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking during the hearing, Rep.
