{"id":125687,"date":"2026-02-16T20:24:22","date_gmt":"2026-02-16T19:24:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=125687"},"modified":"2026-02-16T20:24:22","modified_gmt":"2026-02-16T19:24:22","slug":"former-gov-bellos-nephew-allegedly-fingered-in-%e2%82%a610bn-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/former-gov-bellos-nephew-allegedly-fingered-in-%e2%82%a610bn-fraud\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Gov Bello\u2019s Nephew Allegedly Fingered in \u20a610bn Fraud\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">By Lizzy Chirkpi<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fresh drama unfolded at the Federal High Court of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday as an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission investigator directly linked Kogi State\u2019s Chief of Staff, Ali Bello, the nephew for former governor Yahaya Bello in massive cash movements allegedly siphoned from government funds.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bello serves under Kogi State Governor Ahmed\u00a0 Ododo and is standing trial alongside Dauda Sulaiman over an alleged \u20a610.27 billion misappropriation scheme.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The case is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on a 16-count amended charge bordering on money laundering and diversion of public funds.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Testifying as the 17th prosecution witness, EFCC investigator Ahmed Audu Abubakar walked the court through Exhibit F, a financial trail document showing multiple inflows and suspicious withdrawals tied to the defendants.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Led by prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo, the witness revealed that a $91,000 transfer made on February 5, 2021, was sent to \u201cOga Ali,\u201d which he identified as Ali Bello.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">He further disclosed that \u20a6150,000 was paid to \u201cPresido,\u201d while \u201cRashido\u201d identified as Abdulrasheed physically transported \u20a6150 million from Lokoja to a bureau de change operator.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">More entries dated February 19, 2021 allegedly showed \u20a610 million sent to Bello and \u20a6500,000 to Sulaiman.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere were ten separate transfers of \u20a610 million each, making \u20a6100 million in total,\u201d the witness told the court. \u201cThe funds came from Maigari Murtala, an associate of the first defendant who worked with a bureau de change operator.\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">The witness also confirmed that \u20a6100 million was paid to Dantata and Sawoe Construction Company for the purchase of Plot 1060 in Gwarimpa, Abuja a transaction backed by an irrevocable power of attorney admitted as Exhibit Q.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the prosecution sought to tender extra-judicial statements made by the defendants in late 2022, defence lawyers objected, arguing they failed to meet the voluntariness standards under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Presiding judge James Omotosho immediately ordered a trial-within-trial to settle the dispute.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">Taking the stand again, the EFCC witness insisted the statements were freely made.<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\"><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThere were no threats, no inducements and no pressure,\u201d he said. \u201cAll statements were taken in the presence of lawyers, including Z.E.
