The National Police Council (NPC) has unanimously confirmed Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP), paving the way for his name to be formally sent to the Senate for screening and confirmation in line with the provisions of the Police Act 2020.<\/div>\n

In a statement after the council\u2019s meeting at the State House, Abuja, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, told reporters: \u201cYes, they have unanimously endorsed Disu as IGP.\u201d<\/div>\n

The council chaired by President Tinubu and comprising the governors of the 36 states, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, and the IGP met on Monday to consider Disu\u2019s appointment, fulfilling the legal requirement that precedes transmission of the name to the Senate.<\/div>\n

Olatunji Disu had been serving as Acting Inspector-General of Police since 24 February 2026, following the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun. President Tinubu accepted Egbetokun\u2019s resignation officially tendered on \u201cpressing family considerations\u201d and appointed Disu to lead the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) in an acting capacity amidst the nation\u2019s evolving security challenges.<\/div>\n

President Tinubu, while announcing Disu\u2019s appointment, expressed confidence in his ability to provide \u201csteady and focused direction for the Nigeria Police Force during this critical period.\u201d<\/div>\n

At the ceremony where he assumed leadership, Disu was decorated and charged by President Tinubu with transforming and strengthening the police service. According to reporting at that event, Disu said the detailed account of his career achievements highlighted by President Tinubu \u201calmost brought to tears,\u201d reflecting the personal significance of the moment.<\/div>\n

During the ceremony, Disu vowed to instil zero tolerance for corruption and impunity within the force, emphasising citizen-centred policing, respect for human rights, and enhanced welfare for officers. \u201cI will let them know that the era of impunity is over,\u201d he declared.<\/div>\n

With the Police Council\u2019s endorsement complete, Disu\u2019s name is now set to be forwarded to the Senate for its constitutional screening and confirmation. Once approved, he will formally become the substantive Inspector-General of Police, succeeding Kayode Egbetokun in Nigeria\u2019s top policing post.<\/div>\n

If confirmed by the Senate, Disu will be the 23rd indigenous IGP of Nigeria.<\/div>\n
